WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is at the centre of intense media speculation and a hate campaign against him in America, following the leak of 250,000 US diplomatic cables. He will be live online to answer Guardian readers' questions at 1pm today, subject to his access to an internet connection - which is very much a live issue. His online interview comes at the end of a week of shocking revelations from the cables and on a day when WikiLeaks has been fighting US attempts to take its website down.

2. New Pneumococcal Vaccine Is Killing Babies - American Academy Of Pediatrics
The new pneumococcal vaccine seems to be doubling the Sudden Infant Death rate (SIDS rate) according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. SIDS: PCV13 (0.063%). PCV7 recipients (0.036%). (Increase in mortality 0.03%) Numbers are small (only 4700 were studied with another 2000 controls). But these are the numbers on which the recommendation to give the vaccine is based. Let us look at this against mortality in the US from pneumonia. Post neonatal mortality is approx 0.2% (2). About 3% of the mortality at this age is due to pneumonia (including viral pneumonias) (3). About half of these deaths are due to Pneumococcal pneumonia but for purposes of this calculation I am being generous and assuming that all pneumonia is due to Pneumoccus and it causes 3% of the mortality at this age. This means that deaths from pneumonia in infancy in the USA is 0.006% The increase in deaths from SIDS due to the change from PCV 7 to PCV 13, is 5 fold higher than t he chance of death from pneumonia. In other words, if these figures for mortality are the same when the sample size is bigger, 5 children will die of SIDS due to the vaccine, for 1 child protected from death of pneumonia by the vaccine.

I’m disgusted by Amazon’s cowardice and servility in abruptly terminating today its hosting of the Wikileaks website, in the face of threats from Senator Joe Lieberman and other Congressional right-wingers. I want no further association with any company that encourages legislative and executive officials to aspire to China’s control of information and deterrence of whistle-blowing. I ask Amazon to terminate immediately my membership in Amazon Prime and my Amazon credit card and account, to delete my contact and credit information from their files and to send me no more notices. I understand that many other regular customers feel as I do and are responding the same way..So far Amazon has spared itself the further embarrassment of trying to explain its action openly. This would be a good time for Amazon insiders who know and perhaps can document the political pressures that were brought to bear–and the details of the hasty kowtowing by their bosses–to leak that information.

4. Dick Cheney Charged In $180M Bribery Case, Interpol Arrest Warrant Issued

The energy services company Dick Cheney ran prior to becoming Vice President of the United States was atop the tongue of liberals each time it was awarded a contract in Iraq. Now the company's name, Halliburton, is being spoken somewhere else: Nigeria. According to a story filed late Wednesday, Cheney will be indicted in a Nigerian bribery case as part of an investigation into an alleged $180 million bribery scandal. "Last week, Nigeria arrested at least 23 officials from companies including Halliburton, Saipem, Technip and a former subsidiary of Panalpina Welttransport Holding AG in connection with alleged illegal payments to Nigerian officials. Those detained were all freed on bail on Nov. 29," Bloomberg News' Elisha Bala-Gbogbo wrote. "Authorities in the West African nation are probing Halliburton, Saipem and Technip for the alleged payment of $180 million in bribes to win a $6 billion liquefied natural-gas contract," Bala-Gbogbo added. "Panalpina is being investigated for illegal payments it allegedly made to Nigerian customs officials on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell Plc." The prosecuting counsel for the country's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said that indictments will be handed down in the next three days and that an arrest warrant for Cheney "will be issued and transmitted through Interpol."

5. Mum Worries About Son's Health After Double Dose Swine Flu Vaccine

A Mum whose two-year-old son was given an adult dose of swine flu vaccine said she has lost confidence in health chiefs and feels immunisation staff should have been reprimanded. Vicki O’Keefe, aged 24, of Bishops Way, Widnes, only discovered her son, Alex, was a victim of the medical blunder when he developed a fever. She said: “He started getting the side effects, including diarrhoea. When he woke up, he had the shakes, he was shivering and his teeth were chattering, even though he was fully clothed." Vicki and parents of the other 59 tots affected attended meetings at Stobart Stadium to quiz health chiefs. She has now received a report following an investigation, but believes disciplinary action should have been taken. She fears her son may suffer long term damage as he has had constant chest infections. Vicki, said: “Every few weeks, he gets chest problems and keeps getting colds. All the other parents are concerned too. We have all agreed to send each other e-mails if anything is wrong with our children, so we can keep in touch with each other.”

6. London Killer Biolab Inquiry Announced
The Science and Technology Committee announces a new inquiry into the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (UKCMRI). Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said “The previous Committee published a report in January 2008 welcoming and supporting the creation of a leading medical research centre based in the UK, but had concerns about management and costs. With the announcement confirming funding for the project in October’s Spending Review it is now very timely to scrutinise the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation.”

7. Why Psychotherapies Never Get Better
There are nearly 300,000 American psychotherapists who provide some 450 forms of talk therapy. The latest psychotherapy fad is "cybertherapy"-- which embraces escapism and the mechanized techniques of "virtual reality." It has been given a veneer of legitimacy by a prominent article in the New York Times "Science" section. So what is the evidence that cybertherapy works? Well, the Times reports, it's about as effective--or ineffective--as conventional talk therapy whose very existence depends upon trust in the individual therapist and faith in the therapy.
