1. Julian Assange Gets Visa To Visit Russia

London : WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange holds a CD containing data given by former Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer
Founder of the controversial website WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has been granted a Russian visa and plans to visit the country soon. The visit may happen in a couple of weeks, reports the Russian News Service citing WikiLeaks supporter and friend of Assange, Israel Shamir. No details of the agenda and schedule have been disclosed. However, by that time a Russia-based pro-WikiLeaks NGO currently being established is likely to get its official registration. Assange is now in Great Britain, where he faces possible extradition to Sweden. The Scandinavian country wants him for alleged sex crimes. With the next court hearing scheduled for February 7, Assange may be able to visit Russia in three weeks, but only if the Swedish extradition request is turned down by Britain.

2. US Reports Flu Vaccine Seizures In Babies & Toddlers

Government officials are investigating an apparent increase in fever-related seizures in young children after they got a flu shot. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said there have been 36 confirmed reports of seizures this flu season in children ages 6 months through 2 years. The seizures occurred within one day after they were vaccinated with Fluzone, the only flu shot recommended in the United States for infants and very young children. Thursday's announcement comes at a time when the FDA has been working on disclosing more information about potential safety problems with drugs and devices after they've been approved. In August, a U.S. vaccines advisory panel said doctors should avoid using that vaccine, made by CSL Biotherapies, in children ages 6 months through 8 years. The fever-related seizures — called febrile seizures — are convulsions brought on by a fever in infants or small children.

3. Elias Tembenis, Another Vaccine-Injury Case US Federal Vaccine Court Awards Damages

According to court and medical records, Elias was born on Aug. 23, 2000 and appeared healthy until Dec. 26 when he received his second dose of diphtheria, tetanus, pertusis DTaP vaccine, developed a fever and began having seizures, followed by epilepsy and death. On November 29, 2010, the US Court of Vaccine Compensation ruled in favor of his parents against unpersuasive arguments by the government. Elias' case becomes quietly filed away in vaccine court archives with nearly 1,300 other vaccine brain injuries-none of them apparently being pooled for study. An undetermined number of them, like Elias', involving autism diagnoses. But to win a case in the Vaccine court, the condition, autism, cannot be cited. Why is the medical profession --i ncluding and especially, government health officials -- so resistant to examining the problem and the evidence to ascertain what may be the cause of sudden developmental regression -- emergence of autism -- in pre viously healthy infants? Surely, the charade of turning a blind eye by deliberately obfuscating the terminology--i.e., putting the head in the sand as if to protect against the evil eye--is especially egregious within the context of legal proceedings whose purpose is to determine the medical-scientific merit of the arguments set forth by two parties to a dispute. Who, exactly is being protected by the refusal of the medical profession to examine the possible link between childhood vaccines and autism, and by the Court to refuse to entertain the possibility that a connection may exist? This issue is far from being settled.

4. Sanofi Aventis Epilim Birth Defects Drug Case Dropped By Legal Aid

Lawyers acting for families who blame an epilepsy drug for causing defects in their children have said they are dropping their case against its maker after legal aid was withdrawn. Solicitors Irwin Mitchell said their clients were "devastated" that their case would never be heard in court after six years of preparation for trial. The Legal Services Commission (LSC) said in November that it was no longer funding an action against the makers of sodium valproate, a drug used to prevent epileptic seizures. About 80 families claim the drug, also known as epilim, caused a range of birth defects, including spina bifida, damage to the heart, learning difficulties, cleft palate and deformities of the hands and feet. David Body, a medical law and patients' rights expert at Irwin Mitchell, said: "Our clients are understandably devastated that their case will never be heard in court after six years of preparation for trial. Not having lost at court , our clients are understandably concerned to continue their fight to have the manufacturers of the drug, sanofi, meet their obligations to the children injured by epilim. We fully support our clients in their ongoing campaign to achieve compensation for the harm their children have suffered as a result of drug exposure."

5. Medical Journals, Doctors And Ties To Hedge Funds

In a move that some may consider long overdue, more than a dozen of the most prestigious medical journals will consider requiring doctors who submit studies to disclose any payments received from hedge funds and other large investors. The proposal is expected to be discussed at the next annual meeting of The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which is scheduled for June, according to a spokeswoman for the New England Journal of Medicine. The possibility follows ongoing concerns about conflicts of interest between researchers and the pharmaceutical industry and the extent to which undisclosed financial relationships may unduly influence medical research and, from there, medical practice. But the issue is also encompassing financial ties to large investors, given the growing premium placed on important scientific tidbits by hedge funds that regularly reach out to experts for information that can provide an investing edge.

6. UK Government Interfered In Deadly BioLab Bidding Process

Campaigners against a maximum security "superlab" in the heart of London are calling for a parliamentary inquiry claiming that there was political interference in the bidding process. The UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation, behind the British Library in St Pancras, will be capable of containing flu viruses, malaria, tuberculosis, cancer cells and HIV. Residents living close to the centre are calling for an inquiry into the £600 million project after Cabinet Office emails, seen by the Standard, revealed that the previous government was keen to "make it happen" before the tendering process had closed. They also claim Camden council failed to inform residents fully of the severity of the diseases to be tested at the 3.6 acre site and is stonewalling their questions. Resident Robert Henderson, a retired civil servant, 63, said: "Camden went against their own original plan for a mixed-use development. There's been political interference with the bidding process as well as the grave security issues. There should be a parliamentary inquiry because £250 million of public money is at stake."
