Homosexual “Marriage” in ChurchesIt has been reported that the Government is to unveil proposals to allow civil partnerships to take place in religious settings, including churches. Government Ministers may also take the opportunity to consult on whether civil partnerships should be defined as 'marriages'.At least three important points need to be made with respect to the expected consultation:
The Bible is clear that marriage is the exclusive, life-long union between one man and one woman, instituted by God, for the good of all. It is vital that Christians speak up with clarity for God’s pattern of marriage. To do so is not oppressive but compassionate. Read more on God’s teaching about marriage. It is important to underline that the Government has not made any formal announcement so the nature and content of any consultation is ultimately a matter of speculation at present. However, since the possibility has been widely reported by the mainstream media and the suggestions are in line with previous statements by Government figures, there is scope to raise this matter with MPs and ministers immediately and it is important to do so – expressing concern at the reports, requesting further information and asking our elected representatives to indicate their stance on the issues. These developments could represent the most significant challenge to the biblical pattern of marriage since the General Election and the formation of the Coalition. With many new faces in Parliament and in Government, it is vital that MPs are encouraged to consider these issues at the earliest opportunity especially since some may not be familiar with the significance of what may be proposed and will need time to consider it. Please therefore contact your MP and the Ministers responsible as soon as possible – please read our suggestions as to how to do this. Please pray that God’s pattern for marriage would not be further challenged in our nation but strengthened and restored. For Andrea’s Blog please see here. |
