1. Julian Assange Extradition Trial Report, 2011-02-11
Anna Ardin, Julian Assange & Sofia Wilen
For the third and final day of Julian Assange’s Extradition trial in London, One Click once again collated what we consider to be some of the best and most informative tweets coming out of the court. The lawyers’ presentations today consisted of the closing arguments. Julian Assange has been purposefully portrayed as an enemy of the people by the Swedish premier, Fredrik Reinfeldt. In most developed countries, but not Sweden, the law must be treated separately from the political process. The Assange case has been subject to political interference. Clare Montgomery, the CPS barrister for the prosecution, has form in extradition trials – she previously represented Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in his extradition case. The judge’s decision on the Julian Assange extradition trial will be handed down on 24 February 2011.

2. Supreme Court backing of Twitter reflects badly on mainstream media
Why did the Supreme Court announce last week that it was offering what its president, Lord Phillips, describes as ‘a green light to tweeting and other forms of [text-based] communication’? What has changed, of course, is Twitter. As Phillips explains, rapid developments in communication bring benefits for the justice system. This is true, of course. But the justices would not have issued a jolly press release about ‘tweeting the twists and turns of Supreme Court cases’ if they had not wanted to encourage the use of social networking. And one reason that the Supreme Court is so keen for outsiders to receive ‘regular updates’ may be that the mainstream media no longer routinely cover hearings in even the country’s highest courts.

3. UK Government Spent £239 Million On Swine Flu Vaccine
(Pic courtesy of One Click)
The UK Government spent £239 million on swine flu vaccine, official figures reveal. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) ordered the Department of Health to release the data after it failed to comply with a freedom of information (FOI) request. The Government has always cited commercial confidentiality as a reason for not disclosing the information, but the ICO ruled it was in the public interest. Today, the department confirmed it had spent £239 million on the jab up to the end of vaccine deliveries in April 2010. The money was paid to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for its Pandemrix vaccine, and Baxter for Celvapan. Some 90 million doses were ordered by the UK government, with most of the vaccine supplied by GSK. The costs relate to the development, distribution, promotion and purchasing of the vaccine, although the department has not been told to disclose how much was paid to each individual company.

4. Woman Diagnosed With Epilepsy After Receiving HPV Vaccine
Council Bluffs, IA - You may have seen the commercials aimed at young women, that promote a vaccine to prevent HPV. Twenty-year-old Alexa Lancial, from Council Bluffs, got the shot at age 17, a decision she now regrets. Six months after she was vaccinated Alexa started having violent seizures. On her 18th birthday a doctor diagnosed her with epilepsy. With no family history of epilepsy, she believes the vaccine caused the disorder. "Once a week I'll have those days where I'll just cry, because there's nothing I can do." Alexa takes eight pills to control her epilepsy and counts on her family for support. She urges parents and girls to be informed before getting the vaccine. "Do your research, because we didn't. That's all I can say is do your research," Lancial said. Alexa Lancial has hired a lawyer to help her explore her legal options. According to the Centers for Disease Control, since last September millions of females in the U.S. got the vaccine - 56 died.

5. Former Pfizer Doctor Renews His Killer Trovan Drug Allegations
Some scandals will just not go away. Consider the Trovan affair. In recent months, a cable disclosed by WikiLeaks indicated Pfizer hired investigators to use ‘dirty tricks’ to force the Nigerian government into a settlement. A group of Nigerians and their families filed a lawsuit against the drugmaker for $384 million over their unhappiness with settlement requirements. And now, a former Pfizer employee has written a federal court judge with his own account of alleged misdeeds surrounding the episode, which began back in 1996. Ironically, these latest developments occurred after Pfizer agreed to a $75 million settlement to resolve civil and criminal charges brought by the Kano State government in Nigeria, and hoped the matter would end. However, Juan Walterspiel, who at the time worked as a pediatric research physician at the Pfizer R&D facility in Groton, Connecticut, late last month forwarded a sensational letter to US District Court Jud ge William Pauley, who is presiding over ongoing, separate litigation filed by Nigerian families in New York. In his letter, he offered a detailed account of what he alleged were nefarious behind-the-scenes doings.

6. UK Census 2011 - Unacceptable Cost To Personal Privacy & Security
The Census 2011 media hype is starting to ramp up with this Press Release: Employees need to know their workplace postcode where the Office for National Statistics reiterate their bureaucratic desire to snoop on your job / workplace address. The Census 2011 Questions for England and Wales (.pdf) demand answers about "availability for work" in the past month, treating everyone as if they were all signing on to the dole at the local "Job Centre". For tens of thousands of people, the existence of such a National Database will represent a threat to their personal security or a threat to national security. There is an unacceptable cost to personal privacy and security, because the Census Questions are too detailed and too intrusive. Remember, that for the England and Wales Census 2011, there is no longer any guarantee that your Personal Sensitive Information will not be handed over, on pain of up to 2 years in prison under the Census Act 19 20, in secret, to a vast array of Government agencies and others, as a result of the wide ranging Exemptions introduced by the former Labour government's Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 section 39.
