More than 50 crimes, including sexual and physical assaults and drug possession, were committed at the BBC’s flagship studios over three years.

Asked under a Freedom of Information Act request, BBC chiefs refused to divulge details of offences committed on its premises.

But Scotland Yard revealed that between 2007 and 2010, 54 crimes were committed at Broadcasting House and the BBC Centre in Shepherd’s Bush.

The crimes included a sexual offence, one drugs possession, two harassments, two reports of criminal damage, assault with injury, violence using a weapon and several cases of burglary, theft of motor vehicles and bicycles, and handling stolen goods.

Prosecutions were made or cautions issued in seven cases.

A BBC spokeswoman said: ‘Information was withheld because disclosure could increase the risk of crime on our premises, endangering BBC staff and the public who visit us.’

She added: ‘The BBC takes theft and staff safety very seriously and has implemented a number of measures.’
