Al-'Awlaki to Muslim Journalists: 'A Journalist Is Responsible to Allah for What He Presents to the People'; Keep Exposing the Crimes of the U.S. and Its Agents

On February 14, 2011, the jihadi forum Shumukh Al-Islam released a six-minute video of Yemeni-American jihadi cleric Anwar Al-'Awlaki titled "A Message to the Members of the Media." In it, Al-'Awlaki accuses the U.S. and the West of using liberty and freedom of expression as a pretext to take over the world's resources and treasures, oppress the peoples, and deprive them of their rights. He says that whenever anyone tries to expose "the truth about the U.S. and its agents," the West drops the principle of liberty it pretends to defend and proceeds to silence and arrest the offender, and to prosecute him on false charges.

As examples, Al-'Awlaki mentions numerous journalists who he says were arrested after exposing U.S. crimes – most notably Yemeni journalist 'Abd Al-Ilah Shai', who was arrested by the Yemeni authorities for alleged ties to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Al-'Awlaki extols Shai's journalistic professionalism and calls on all Muslim journalists in Yemen and worldwide to step forward in his defense, saying that they must "continue the campaign he began" and should not serve as "a means of promulgating the American imperialist plot."

Special Dispatch No. 3582

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Hopes for Egypt-Like Uprising Against U.S. in Afghanistan, Says: 'The Egyptian People Must Use These Crucial Moments To Their Advantage and Carve Out a New Political Life and Direction As a Muslim Nation'

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Taliban's shadow government in Afghanistan) today issued a statement lauding the recent Egyptian uprising and expressing hope for a similar uprising against the U.S. in Afghanistan.

The statement, titled ''Response of the Islamic Emirate Regarding the Victory of the Popular Uprising in Egypt,'' was published on the official website of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Following is the text of the statement:

''The more than two-week long popular uprising in Egypt, at last, compelled Hosni Mubarak, ruler of that country, to step down by ceding to the basic condition of the protesters.

''He was at the helms of affairs of the Egyptian government for the last thirty years and had been enjoying all-sided American and Israeli assistance in financial, political, and intelligence fields. However, realities on the ground established (once more) that an arsenal of weapons, a huge army, and foreign support is no guarantee for continuation of power; nor can they prevent the caravan of the aspirations of the people from forging ahead. Whenever the patience of the people overwhelms its brims, it is set to lead its way as a strong tide."
