In a recent interview about Jonathan Pollard with Aaron Barnea for Israel’s
Channel 2, R. James Woolsey, former head of the CIA, stated that Jonathan
Pollard’s sentence is excessive and emphasized that Pollard has not only
served enough time, he has served more than enough time! Pollard, said
Woolsey, should have been freed 5 years ago when Woolsey first called for
his release.
Woolsey is then shown in a 2001 interview with Channel 2's Ran Melnik.
Melnik asks Woolsey if he is in support of the new momentum to secure the
release of Jonathan Pollard. In the ten-year old interview, Woolsey
adamantly declares that he is not in support of Pollard's release. He
insists that Pollard should never be freed, that he should remain in prison
for the rest of his life!
Switching back to the present tense, Barnea asks Woolsey what caused him to
change his position so radically. His response is interesting, if not
terribly enlightening. He does, however, repeat that Pollard should go free
now, and that he should be freed unconditionally, and not as a quid pro quo
in some diplomatic deal.
The interview was intended for a Hebrew-speaking audience consequently all
of the narration is in Hebrew. However, the segments with Woolsey are in
English (with Hebrew subtitles). It is therefore easy to follow, even for
those who may not understand the Hebrew narration.
For those who need it, the video begins with the announcer stating:
“Jonathan Pollard – more and more voices, especially in the United States,
are calling for his release from prison. Even the former director of the CIA
in the Clinton era, has changed his mind and tells our reporter in
Washington, Aaron Barnea, “Twenty-five years in prison is enough – indeed,
more than enough!”
Two interviews, 10 years apart. Fascinating! See for yourself!
