Ford Foundation, Big Funder of Israeli NGOs, Pulling Out

The Ford Foundation, which has provided $40 million to civil society NGOs in Israel since 2003, will not resume its funding for programs in Israel once its current grant round ends in two years. The reason, the organization explains, has to do with changing priorities, not with politics.

But for struggling groups in Israel, losing the Ford Foundation’s financial backing means spending time and effort on developing alternative resources in an atmosphere of growing hostility toward civil society organizations that focus on human rights.

The Ford Foundation, ranked the second-largest philanthropic foundation in America, with assets of more than $10 billion, launched its program in Israel in 2003 as a partnership with the New Israel Fund, which provided the presence on the ground and administered the grants. Prior to this program, the Ford Foundation had given to a broad array of causes in Israel since the Jewish state gained its independence in...

Jewish Democrats asked to denounce Obama’s meeting with Al Sharpton

To njdc “at” njdc.org; nynjdc “at” njdc.org
To: National Jewish Democratic Council
Copied to pro-Israel blog and conservative Web sites

Gentlemen,

The National Jewish Democratic Council is on record (http://www.njdc.org/media/entry/njdc_decries_mitt_romneys_embrace_of_henry_ford) as condemning Mitt Romney’s appearance at the Henry Ford Museum because of Ford’s publication of “The International Jew.” Henry Ford has been dead for more than 60 years, and he retracted and repudiated “The International Jew” before he died. This means that NJDC has set a red line at association with a dead EX-anti-Semite. We are therefore confident that NJDC will take prompt public exception to Barack Obama’s multiple appearances, the most recent on April 6 2011, with a live and unrepentant one.

“Civil rights leader” is a creative term for an individual who levies racially-motivated false accusations of rape (Tawana Brawley scandal) and leads a hate...

Democrat says Libya costs run much higher

A Democratic lawmaker says the White House is “dramatically underestimating” the true cost of the military’s involvement in Libya by relying on accounting that obscures the total financial burden being saddled on taxpayers.

Rep. Brad Sherman, a lawyer and accountant, told The Washington Times on Thursday that more accurate accounting of the mission would provide a clearer picture of just how much money the U.S. pours into this and other U.N.-backed missions while putting Congress in a better position to silence critics who say the nation is shortchanging the global body. The Californian also said the cost of the U.S. involvement in Libya should be covered with the estimated $33 billion in Libyan assets that have been frozen by the Treasury Department.

“As much fun as I find cost accounting, the reason I raise these issues is because I think those Libya assets ought to be available to pay for what goes on over and in Libya, and...

Israelis conducting global war on Hamas

Israel’s security agencies are stepping up targeted attacks throughout the world on Hamas‘ leadership in what one Israeli official called “intelligence-based prevention.”

In the past two months, Israeli operatives have intercepted a German ship in international waters, fired a missile at a suspected Hamas leader in Sudan, and captured a Hamas engineer in the Ukraine, according to Israeli and Western officials and press reports from the region.

“Israel defeated the wave of suicide bombing attacks against it in 2002 by identifying the leadership that was behind it and making it clear to them that they would pay a price,” said Dore Gold, a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations and specialist on international terrorism.

“Presently, the effort to cripple Hamas‘ military capabilities is no longer confined to the Gaza Strip alone, but to the entire Hamas global network and that of its allies.”

On Thursday, an anti-tank rocket...

Obama out to get Israel in second term

Cindy Adams, a reputable columnist with NY Post writes,

A MAJOR businessman with ties to our DC administration, which is about to become bankrupt tomor row, says: “Israel is in danger. Obama cares nothing about Israel. Abandoning that nation would politically boomerang in a re-election year, so the White House maintains a pretense of caring. I’ve spoken to them about this and know it for a fact. For safety’s sake, they’re letting other governments lead the propaganda assaults against that country while they’re hiding behind.”

No surprise there.

Good News Israel

Compliments of Anglo Saxon Raanana Real Estate

# Provisional calculations for Israel’s defense exports exceeded $7.3 billion in 2010, and the final figure will probably reach $7.4 billion equaling the all-time high achieved in 2009. Is this GN we had to ask ourselves? After all we are talking weaponry here, but after a long and often acrimonious debate – with ourselves – we came to the conclusion that; yes it is. First, it is very strictly regulated, then it also allows the IDF to maintain its edge with the most sophisticated defense equipment, it also helps Israel to forge strong diplomatic ties with the countries that count, and then of course there are the numbers. Defense exports have been rising for the past five years: from $3.5 billion in new orders in 2005 to $6.6 billion in 2008 and then the highs of ’09 and’10. Figures not to be sneezed at.

# 90 local authorities, including 30 Arab towns and villages, thirty academic institutions throughout the...

The Only Solution for the Problems of the Middle East

By Mordechai Kedar

We are currently witnessing social unrest in many Arab states, and street riots have already succeeded in ousting two presidents – in Tunisia and in Egypt – and in unsettling the governmental fabric in Libya, Yemen, Morocco, Syria and Bahrain. The ease and swiftness with which the flames have spread from country to country in the last two months is due to a common trait shared by these countries: all of their regimes are dictatorships headed by non-legitimate rulers who ruthlessly hold sway over a starving, neglected and abused populace which has decided to put an end to its oppression and humiliation.

The fundamental problem characterizing Middle Eastern states is that they have no legitimacy in the eyes of their citizenry because their borders were marked by European colonial interests. Great Britain created the borders of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen and the Gulf Emirates; France was involved in...

Netanyahu’s Phony Realism

“People do not understand where they live. If you do not live in the real world, it is possible to disregard everything, and I suggest that they start being wary in order to protect the existing construction.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made these remarks last month in an effort to justify an attack by Israeli security forces on a small Jewish community in Samaria where for the first time pneumatic guns were used on Israeli civilians by Israeli forces.

‘The zeitgeist is against us,’ Netanyahu was saying. ‘Our international standing is eroding. We’ll be lucky to hold onto even part of Judea and Samaria. So quit complaining. Those plastic bullets we pumped into you were a gift – a kind of reality check.’ Having grown accustomed to international pressure, a hostile media and the acceptance of the Palestinian Arab narrative the world over, Netanyahu has resigned himself to life as he knows it.

Unfortunately, Netanyahu’s approach is...

US wants Goldstone Report to dissapear.

WASHINGTON – The US is consulting with allies at the United Nations to work to end any consideration of the Goldstone Report by the international body, US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said on Thursday.

The US has long been opposed to the report’s accusations that Israel intentionally targeted civilians in its war just over two years ago against Hamas, but has added momentum in its push to see the report shelved since its presiding jurist Richard Goldstone last Friday reconsidered his findings.

“The United States has been clear from the outset that we believe that report was gravely and fundamentally flawed, that it completely unfairly drew conclusions about Israel’s intentions and conduct,” Rice told the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, adding that the Obama administration would like “to see this entire Goldstone proposition disappear.”

To that end, the US has been discussing what procedural steps could be taken, including halting followup actions...
