Taiwan should be concerned. A combination of factors, including internal social and economic problems and a perception of American weakness, could spur China to move aggressively against Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy that China regards as a renegade province.

Japan's Economic Minister Says Combined Economic Damage From Earthquake,Tsunami and Nuclear Accident Worse than Expected

VOA reports Japan's economic minister says the damage to the country's economy from last month's earthquake and tsunami is worse than first thought.

Japan had estimated that the damage may total as much as $295 billion, a figure that did not include the cost of possible contamination of food and water from radiation leaks from the crippled nuclear reactors at Fukushima.

But on Tuesday, economic minister Kaoru Yosano said the blow to the Japanese economy is "larger than our original expectations." He did not make a new estimate but said the damage is "wide-ranging," hitting the northeast sector of the country with its sophisticated manufacturing industries.

Devastated Infrastructure

Japan's infrastructure has been devastated and its manufacturing supply chains broken. Production at some of the country's largest manufacturers -- Toyota, Honda and Sony -- has been stymied. The International Monetary Fund has lowered its 2011 economic growth forecast for Japan, the world's third biggest economy, from 1.6 percent to 1.4 percent. But one economic research company (Capital Economics) says Japan's economy may shrink by 1.5 percent this year.

A month after the twin natural disasters, Japan has not decided how to refinance the recovery. Its public debt is already the industrialized world's biggest at about 200 percent the size of its economy.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan, whose political fortunes had plummeted even before the earthquake and tsunami, may be forced to sell more debt or raise taxes. Tax increases could further diminish Japanese consumers' confidence and willingness to spend as the scope of the nuclear disaster remains unclear. One survey that tracks confidence among merchants closest to the country's consumers showed it tumbled at the fastest pace ever in March.

How can any Jew or any friend of Israel or any patriotic American, for that matter, persist in defending this awful administration? By the time the next Presidential election rolls around, it will be obvious that Obama has presided over the Islamist conquest of much of the Middle East and the isolation and weakening of Israel--painting America's only real Middle Eastern ally and the only democracy in the region into a nuclear corner.

Historian: Obama Abandoning Israel

Bruce Thornton sees Barack Obama as a modern-day Neville Chamberlain, and accuses the President of abandoning Israel for the "Muslim world." Click here for the story.

Thornton is right. But Obama's foreign policy is far more menacing than mere appeasement. Whereas Chamberlain sincerely sought to preserve the peace in Europe but instead made war with Nazi Germany inevitable by misinterpreting Hitler's intentions--the naive British prime minister mistakenly believed that Hitler, who was bent on world dominance, could be placated with limited territorial concessions--Obama has both appeased and actually attempted to align with nuclear-arming, Islamist Iran and with Islamism in general. Chamberlain was an appeaser; but he was neither a Nazi nor a Nazi sympathizer. At best, Obama is both an appeaser and an Islamist sympathizer; at worst, he's an Islamist supporter. As shown by is actions and words, he has tried to engage (appease and align with) every leading Islamist group, except for Al Qaeda and so-called irreconcilable elements of the Taliban.

Obama's 'Moderate' Muslim Brothers Want Sharia

While the Obama White House and his national security team accept the view of a more moderate Brotherhood, counterterrorism experts such as Steve Emerson and Walid Phares point to a political platform published by the Muslim Brotherhood in 2007. The platform called for a council of religious scholars to be set up to approve all laws passed by Egypt's civilian institutions. The platform also stated that Christians or women could not become president or prime minister.

Sadly, Sharia law has tremendous popularity among Egypt's so-called moderates within the Muslim Brotherhood. they claim they want only an Islamic frame of reference for legislation, while conservatives noted that Article 2 of the constitution states: "Islam is the religion of the state and the principles of the Islamic Sharia are the main source of legislation."
