1. Swine Flu Vaccine - More Swedish Children Diagnosed With Narcolepsy
There may be many more children than previously thought who have suffered from narcolepsy, the uncontrollable need to sleep, as a side effect from the swine flu vaccine. The Swedish Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket), is reviewing the records of about 135 cases, after having combed the country, including sleep clinics, for suspected cases, south Sweden’s daily newspaper, Sydsvenskan, reported. “It's not so easy to get hold of information about vaccinations. We have various systems in the Swedish health care that make it difficult to sort out what has happened,” Tomas Salmonson, Scientific Director for the MPA, told Sydsvenskan. Narcolepsy is a rare lifelong disease that causes an uncontrollable need to sleep. Twelve other countries have reported a possible link between the swine flu vaccine and the sleep disorder, including Finland, Iceland and the UK, as confirmed by the World Health Organization.

2. Toddler given MMR vaccine without parental consent to meet government targets
Fury: Robina Siddique, 28, claims her son Mohammed Raees Ali, right,
was given the MMR jab against her wishes in Birmingham
A nurse is under investigation after she allegedly gave a child the MMR jab without his mother’s consent. Practice nurse Rashiela Parekh failed to ask permission before injecting the three-year-old and did not inform his parents that he had been given the jab until it was too late, his mother claims. Robina Siddique has accused the nurse of giving her son the injection simply to meet Government targets. She said she had decided not to give her toddler Mohammed the combined measles, mumps and rubella jab because she believes it may be unsafe. But when she took her son to a surgery for the diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccines, Miss Parekh also gave him the MMR injection without asking permission, she claims. The housewife has now made an official complaint to the Birmingham East and North Primary Care Trust and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

3. Julian Assange extended interview
Screen grab from Julian Assange interview,
Australian Broadcasting Corporation
LEIGH SALES: In a book about you that's recently been released by two Guardian journalists, David Leigh and Luke Harding, they say they had an exchange with you last July, they wanted you to redact the names of informants mentioned in the Iraq War logs and they claim that you said, "Well, they're informants, so if they get killed, they've got it coming to them, they deserve it." Did you say that? JULIAN ASSANGE: No, and we are suing them for libel and we have witnesses to show that is a libellous claim, and is an ongoing dispute, so there's a lot of vitriol in the top end of the news business and a lot of back-stabbing, and unfortunately we happen to be on the receiving end of it from this individual. LEIGH SALES: So you're saying that that statement was completely fabricated? JULIAN ASSANGE: It is completely fabricated.

4. The WikiLeaks Whistleblowers Debate
Julian Assange on stage at the debate
The fascination that the general public of all colour, creed, class and religion has for all things WikiLeaks is far from abated. In his first formal public appearance since his exit from Belmarsh Magistrates Court in his Swedish sex extradition trial, WikiLeaks Editor in Chief Julian Assange remains an intriguing draw. But a far greater draw than the man and his website was the actual topic of the debate: This house believes whistleblowers make the world a safer place, held at Kensington Town Hall in London last Saturday, hosted by the Frontline Club and The New Statesman. The proposition was carried by the vast majority. One of the best quotes coming out of the debate that generated huge applause was delivered by Mehdi Hasan who said: “In a perfect world we would not need whistleblowers but we do because our governments lie repeatedly.” When Assange announced his intention to sue the Guardian newspaper, some of the mainstream media Twitterati at the debate virtually crashed their keyboards in synchronised bitchy annoyance/delight. Good luck to him, say many. The behaviour of the Guardian and The New York Times towards Assange are surely object lessons for any source/informant contemplating sticking head above parapet: do it with either of the foregoing and you may well get your head kicked in and your character assassinated whilst they make fortunes from your information. Many thanks are due to the Frontline Club and The New Statesman for holding this event. Well done. A big round of applause for all those involved.

5. UN rights expert denied Bradley Manning visit
A U.N. torture investigator said Monday he is frustrated at being denied an unmonitored visit to a U.S. Army private suspected of giving classified material to WikiLeaks. Juan Mendez said the U.S. government "has not been receptive to a confidential meeting" with Pfc. Bradley Manning. He said in a statement that a monitored conversation would be counter to the practice of his U.N. mandate. Officials at the U.S. mission in Geneva said they weren't immediately able to comment.

6. Obsessed with Jacob
Jacob Appelbaum wants the Feds to stop grabbing his junk
One day after being detained at the Canadian border trying to enter Washington State, Jacob Appelbaum jokes about writing the first Yelp reviews of all of our nation's airport detention areas. "Two thumbs up my ass," he quips, referring to the invasive welcome he gets every time he reenters the country. But Appelbaum's bravado belies an angst that might seem paranoid if it weren't justified. The 28-year-old University of Washington researcher recently earned notoriety as the American face of WikiLeaks, and with it the ire of US government officials eager to punish somebody—anybody—for last year's leak of embarrassing helicopter footage and massive dump of diplomatic cables. The harassment is beginning to take its intended toll. "In the middle of the night, when I hear a noise, I have to ask myself, 'Is this it? Do they have guns? Do I accidentally get shot?'" Only this time, Appelbaum's not joking.

7. Fukushima Nuclear Crisis
On Friday 11 March 2011, Japan was hit by a magnitude 9 earthquake followed by a gigantic tsunami. The official toll by 6 April was 12 468 dead, and more than 15 000 missing, hundreds of thousands lost their homes, millions are still either without electricity or affected by shortages of electricity; and most worrying of all, a nuclear disaster with no end in sight. The earthquake and tsunami were unstoppable, but was the nuclear disaster waiting to happen, and could it have been avoided? The Japanese government has attempted to downplay the health hazard from the radiation leaks, as have governments and regulators worldwide. They have also been at pains to minimize the deaths from past nuclear disasters. Fukushima is just one among many similar disasters waiting to happen worldwide; governments and regulators have systematically downplayed the risks and hidden the real costs of nuclear power; there is no place for nuclear in a truly green energy portfoli o; furthermore, there is a lot we can do to put the nuclear genie back into the bottle.

9. Government Sanctioned Elder Abuse
“The law says veterans have the right to due process. But when the fiduciary process is initiated, that all goes out the window.” Two horrifying examples of government agency tyrannical policies that abuse and exploit the elderly. One case, uncovered by Connecticut Watchdog.com involves Canadian elder abuse.Kathleen Palamarek was forcibly abducted by police and ambulance attendants from the home of her daughter and son-in-law in the presence of a registered nurse, and involuntary returned to a nursing home where she was prescribed massive doses of narcotics. An independent toxicologist said Mrs. Palamarek is lucky to be alive after the drugging. The second case, reported by The New York Times, involves the US Veterans Affairs trustee program. This program disenfranchises elderly veterans and their families / legal guardians with VA-appointed trustees.

10. Survival Guru Highlights Lyme Disease
Ray Mears, the British survival guru, has revealed how a tick bite led to a 14-year battle with Lyme disease that nearly ended his career. Mears, who presents television shows including Survival and Wild Britain, was speaking at the start of Tick Awareness Week. He described how a tick bite led to excruciating back pain and declining health that almost forced him to give up work. Sarah Randolf, professor of parasite ecology at Oxford University, said cases of Lyme disease were compounded by "a poor and haphazard assessment" of its recent prevalence, as well as the increase of deer population which can transport bacteria-carrying ticks. Mears, who is the patron of the charity for tick-borne diseases Borreliosis and Associated Diseases Awareness-UK (Bada-UK), is leading calls for more awareness of the disease, which can cause severe arthritis, neurological damage, heart problems and fibromyalgia (muscle and connective tissue pain). "I fee l that there is not enough awareness of Lyme disease in this country, given the fact that in rare cases it may become chronic," he said.

11. New Health-Freedom Bill Launched In Texas
The Complementary and Alternative Health Care Services Bill (House Bill 1716/Senate Bill 1084) is a brand-new bill, just filed in the State legislature. It recognizes the safety of complementary-and-alternative modalities and will protect the natural health-care industry from the rampages of arbitrary and mindless medical bureaucrats, and with it also protect patient access to that industry in Texas. The National Health Federation (NHF) is one of several organizations actively working to get this Bill passed so that Texans’ health rights can be protected. We are planning the next "Lobby Day" in Austin, Texas, with the goal being to provide the legislative staff and Committee members with more information and awareness about the positive aspects of the joint Bill.
