1. Foundations, Conflicts Of Interest And Drugmakers

Major philanthropic foundations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, regularly make the news with their donations and initiatives aimed at improving global health. But there is an aspect to their efforts that may be overlooked - such organizations can have links with drugmakers that could constitute a conflict of interest, according to an analysis published in PLoS Medicine. Take the Gates Foundation. Several members of its management committee, leadership teams, affiliates, and major funders are currently or were previously members of the boards or executive branches of several major drugmakers, including Merck and Novartis.

Maine Legislators Consider Two Bills On Vaccination

Dr Meryl Nass, MD
The first bill (LD 694) asks for vaccine providers to provide a list of vaccine ingredients each time vaccines are given to children. The second (LD 941) prohibits mandatory vaccinations. My letters to the Health and Human Services Committee on these bills are published here in support of both bills.

Patients in US Hospitals At High Risk Harm from Professional Negligence

The New York Times reports that NY state inspectors have found that "long after a major Brooklyn hospital said it had stopped over-radiating premature babies, inappropriate X-rays were still being administered as recently as January." The inspectors found 27 instances of infants having been subjected multiple times to over-radiation. NYT Columnist, Maureen Dowd writes: "When my brother went into the hospital with pneumonia, he quickly contracted four other infections in the intensive care unit...Michael died in the ICU." The most recent assessment by Health Affairs found that ONE in THREE patients who are admitted to a US hospital suffer from "a mistake." Anti-smoking lobby recommends drug linked to numerous deaths

The UK anti-smoking lobby ASH have controversially suggested that smokers should be placed on the dangerous chemical Varenicline, which is sold under the trade name Champix or Chantix. This drug has been linked to more than 100 reports of suicides, more than 400 reports of violence, and more than 11,000 other cases of severe side effects. Users were also associated with 18 times the number of cases of violence than an average person. Out of a study of 484 pharmaceutical drugs it was found to have the largest number of violent cases. Big Brother Watch have previously commented on the dubious record of ASH and its links to pharmaceutical companies. While maintaining financial connections with Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline, they talk of shadowy ‘influence’ from tobacco companies encouraging people to smoke. Those who wish to smoke, a perfectly legal activity, should be allowed to do so, while those who wish to quit should be provided support from gr oups such as NHS Smokefree, but to suggest dangerous drugs is an abuse of power for lobbying firms such as ASH which have a financial conflict of interest. They should cease promoting Varenicline and its branded versions immediately.

What’s new about WikiLeaks?

We shouldn’t be surprised by the war on WikiLeaks. The elite have always loathed the radical press, from English civil war news books to early American labour newspapers. Today, as a small organisation, WikiLeaks is firmly in the tradition of those radical publishers who tried to lay "all the Mysteries and secrets of Government" before the public. For reasons of realpolitik, we have worked with some of the largest media groups, but we have also broadened our base to more than 50 regional publishers, activist groups and charities, giving them early access to hundreds - or, in some cases, thousands - of documents relevant to their countries or causes. In the long view of history, WikiLeaks is part of an honourable tradition that expands the scope of freedom by trying to lay "all the mysteries and secrets of government" before the public. We are, in a sense, a pure expression of what the media should be: an intelligence agency of th e people, casting pearls before swine.

The WikiLeaks conundrum — one size cannot fit all

The European Arrest Warrant can be a useful tool in fighting international organised crime, but in the Assange case it raises many questions about whether it is the right answer to urgent legal questions. The case of Julian Assange raises important questions about the European Arrest Warrant. Sexual assault does not usually fall into the category of misdemeanour. One of the charges against Assange is rape, which sits high on most lists of egregious crimes; however, Sweden has designated this particular alleged offence as the most minor form of rape in its calibrated system. The facts of the allegations are not simple and are clouded by misread cues and profound differences in legal approach. The EAW as currently drawn is a blunt instrument. It is based on a blind faith in the criminal justice systems of other European countries, but fundamental rights do not receive the same level of protection in all countries. My concern is that, in seeking to integrate law enforcement, we surrender safeguards that are essential to liberty and human rights. The Eurowarrant system should contain far greater protections and we should be calling for a European review to ensure that basic rights to a fair trial are respected across Europe.

Mother fears for soldier son held in US over alleged WikiLeaks data

Fears: Bradley Manning's mother is concerned about his mental health
The mother of a soldier held in custody in the US for allegedly leaking data to WikiLeaks has asked William Hague for help because she fears her son's mental health is deteriorating. Bradley Manning's Welsh mother asked that a member of the British embassy visit her son, who has been held alone for 23 hours a day in a maximum security cell in Virginia for 11 months. In a letter to the Foreign Secretary, Susan Manning wrote: "I was very distressed by seeing Bradley. Being in prison is having a damaging effect on him physically and mentally. I am worried that his condition is getting worse. I would like someone to visit him who can check on his conditions."

One Last Goodbye: Sometimes only a mother's love can help end the pain

This book is a powerful memoir about how a loving mother helped her precious daughter die only to be accused of killing her. Watching her child die is the hardest thing a mother can ever do. But for Kay Gilderdale, saying a final goodbye to her only daughter Lynn was exceptionally painful: she'd played a part in her death. Lynn was just 14 when she was struck down by the crippling disease ME, leaving her paralysed and in constant agony. Over the next 17 years, she became desperate to escape her miserable existence, even begging her mum to help her die. So, one night, when Kay found Lynn attempting suicide, she was forced to make an impossible decision. Continue watching her child suffer or help her end the pain? Eventually, fighting her every instinct, Kay helped her precious daughter take a fatal overdose. But while Lynn was finally free, her mother faced a fresh agony – a possible lifetime behind bars. The highly controversial trial that followed opened a fierce public debate on assisted suicide. Is it murder or mercy? Here, in her heartbreaking story, Kay reveals the harrowing truth behind the headlines and the desperate lengths a mother will go to for the love of a child. One Click Note: In the article in the Daily Mail (linked below), Kay Gilderdale states that the trigger for her daughter's illness was the TB vaccine.

Oppose Nevada Bill That Makes Practicing Natural Medicine Without Licence A Felony

Nevada Senate Bill 412 (SB 412) provides for the regulation of the practice of complementary integrative medicine by creating a government-sanctioned Board of Complementary and Integrative Medicines to control all natural health care, backed by the power of the State to imprison and fine all offenders. Just imagine when, as with other such medical boards, the power seekers and control freaks who naturally gravitate to positions of power in government come to have the say over what type of natural medicine may be practiced and what type may not. Will your favorite form of natural medicine survive? Or will it be branded a heresy and persecuted? It does not take a rocket scientist to see that this Bill is the road to ruin for all of those creative natural health practitioners who refuse to conform. This Board is just a not-so-clever attempt to create and enforce a monopoly that will end up strangling CA M practice. SB 412 must be defeated or amended to protect natural health and its practitioners.
