Late night cinema, but I have been speaking in LA today and this evening, so forgive the late hour. A little 1933 gem -- includes racy pre-code sexual situations. Culled from Max Miller's book, "I Cover the Waterfront," there has reached the Rivoli a stolid and often grim picture, the principal asset of which is the clever acting of the principals, particularly that of the late Ernest Torrence. Its drama is not nearly as successful as one might expect in a film directed by James Cruze. The sullen happenings are more shocking than suspenseful, and for moments of levity there are the mumblings and doings of a bibulous newspaper man and the Hollywood conception of the manner in which another reporter berates his city editor. Instead of depicting several contrasting episodes from the original chronicle, the producers have contented themselves with concentrating on a melodramatic series of incidents concerned with a sinister fisherman who finds that there is more money in smuggling Chinese into the United States than in angling for tuna. This evil specimen of humanity is known as Eli Kirk, and itchances that he has an unusually attractive daughter named Julie, who is personated by Claudette Colbert. She, it appears, is much more simple than she looks, for while she knows that her father is a terror when drunk, she evidently believes that that is the limit of his wrongdoing. There is also Joseph Miller, one of those newspaper geniuses to be found only in motion pictures. Ben Lyon has charge of this part. This melodrama is laid on San Diego's waterfront. Kirk is a kindly father, but he thinks nothing of dropping a bound and gagged Chinese overboard when a Coast Guard cutter pursues his fishing craft. Later a character referred to as Old Chris, who drags the harbor water for anything he can find, brings up the body of the Chinese just when the ubiquitous Miller comes alongside in another boat. It looks like a good story to Miller, who, knowing that his city editor, John Phelps, may doubt him, decides to take the body to his office. The reporter insists that Kirk is responsible for the death of the Chinese, but Phelps hazards in no uncertain terms that there must be evidence against Kirk before the story can be printed. Miller decides to pay attention to Julie, hoping to glean from her information regarding her father's secret activities, but evidently she knows nothing, and what is more, Miller is not precisely blind to the girl's beauty; in fact, he falls in love with her. Nevertheless, he continues his investigation, and once again the Coast Guard men board Kirk's boat. He has been shark fishing this time. This is suspicious, inasmuch as it would have been to a fisherman's advantage to go South for tuna. Kirk, however, has his reason for harpooning sharks, which is disclosed in the course of this narrative. Miller is Kirk's nemesis, but after the old man passes away with a bullet through his lung, one is informed that Julie and the great reporter are to be married. Mr. Torrence's last performance was the part of Kirk. He did, as always, excellent work. Miss Colbert does well as Julie, but she is scarcely convincing as a fisherman's daughter, chiefly because she does not look the type. Ben Lyon makes the most of his part. Purnell Pratt, Harry Beresford and Rosita Marstini are equal to the demands of their rĂ´les. So where is justice? This Islamic supremacist should have been executed by now. What's the hold up? According to Hasan's lawyer, John Galligan, it is Obama. Police 'hid' abuse of 60 girls by Asian takeaway workers linked to murder of 14-year-old Daily Mail (hat tip Stephen) At least 60 schoolgirls were groomed for sex by workers at seedy takeaways linked to the murder of a 14-year-old girl. Children as young as 11 were targeted by mainly Asian staff at fast food outlets in Blackpool. They were offered food, alcohol and cigarettes in return for sexual favours. An unpublicised police report produced after 14-year-old Charlene Downes vanished in 2003 found the girls, most if not all white, had been victims of the ‘honey pot’ premises. There were claims last night that the report was suppressed for reasons of political correctness. Detectives believe she was killed like Charlene, whose body has never been found. Two Middle Eastern restaurant owners were acquitted over Charlene’s murder in 2007 and the crime remains unsolved. The pair still run a kebab shop in Blackpool which was also linked to Paige, and she too was identified as a victim of sexual exploitation. Last year police reported that the takeaway was attracting young girls who were being supplied with alcohol and cocaine. Victims: Charlene Downes (left) is believed to have been murdered while Paige Chivers has been missing since 2007 The revelations about the scale of grooming centred around the downmarket cafes comes amid growing concern at disturbing cases involving mainly Asian gangs exploiting young white girls for sex in the Midlands and North of England. I remember back in early 2010, in the very beginning of this attack on Ground Zero. When the American people first heard of the stab in the eye, the Ground Zero mosque, they were floored and outraged, so Islamic supremacists behind the project said, it's not a mosque (despite the fact that it said it was a mosque on their website), it was a prayer space (a prayer space is a mosque), and then it was a prayer component, and so it goes ....... Now that the Ground Zero mosque has had their three Islamic radicals, Daisy the Khan, Imam Feisal Rauf and Abdullah Adhami, exposed and removed, the media is re-framing the narrative by removing the religious component from the mega mosque and eliminating talk of imams and such. Enter stage right, the resurrection of thug developer Sharif El-Gamal, New Yorker, businessman, waiter! It's funny: just last month I was predicting this very thing when I was speaking in Boston. I said, watch for the new media spin on the Ground Zero mosque to be secular. Yes, secular. After removing not one, not two, but three religious figures and imams from the Cordoba House, now the emphasis is on the supposedly secular nature of the Ground Zero mosque initiative. Now the media is reframing the Cordoba Mosque community center sans religious component at all. Sharif el-Gamal, a Muslim who threatened another Muslim who opposed the mosque, is the secular face of the "community center." But it's not, and he ain't. Grifter Gamal, who has defaulted on not one but two bank loans and was evicted from his Soho offices, loves to play the mosaic card. He always mentions that he had a Polish Catholic mother and Egyptian Muslim father. But they divorced over religion, and on her deathbed, his mother allegedly made a death wish that the boys not be brought up Muslim (but after her death, El-Gamal's father got his claws into the boys and took them to Egypt). And the rest is Ground Zero mosque history. These media hacks are exhausting. Hard to know why they just don't all move to Iran or the newly free (cough, cough) Egypt, where they can have all the sharia their little hearts desire. Instead, they torture us. The latest idea to move the Ground Zero mosque forward is to paint the Ground Zero Mosquestrosity as a secular (chuckle) enterprise by a real New Yawker. Here Geraldine Baum of the LA Times does a silly puff piece on Gamal, reframing the Ground Zero mosque story into a Damon Runyon sorta NY story. No bank loan defaults in this pocketful of miracles, or prostitute busts, or arrests for assault, or threats to Muslims who oppose the mosque. Just Baum's folksy yarn about a misunderstood businessman innocently and sans motive trying his Andy Hardy best to build a 15-story mega mosque in a building destroyed by the jets of 911. The man behind the Manhattan mosque Businessman Sharif El-Gamal has been undeterred by the furor over his planned Islamic center near the former World Trade Center site. No sensitivity, no rachmonis. Just playing the vicim card at the site of the largest mass murder in the name of Islam on American soil. Yeah, a monster mosque, that's the ticket. It's a line he has made using all his dexterity as a quintessential striving New Yorker. The New York Times reported last Sunday that “a dispute” is taking place over the remains of 9/11 victims, “between some of the victims’ families and the officials planning the National September 11 Memorial and Museum underneath where the twin towers stood.” The dispute has arisen, says the Times, because “officials plan to take the remains seven stories below ground and place them in the new museum behind a wall with a quotation from Virgil about never forgetting, studded in letters of World Trade Center steel. But the families, appalled by the idea of remains that could belong to their loved ones being turned into a lure for tourists, want them kept in a separate above-ground memorial that would be treated like hallowed ground.” The remains of the victims of the September 11th Islamic attack on this country do not belong to those ghouls at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum (Ground Zero mosqueteer Daisy the Khan is on their advisory board). Sally Regenhard, who lost her son Christian on 9/11, explained: “I personally feel I’ve been robbed of access to where my son’s remains are potentially being buried. My entire family, we will never go in there. This is a post-traumatic stress situation waiting to happen.” Rosemary Cain, whose son George, a firefighter, was killed on 9/11, said that putting the remains in the museum was “like a freak show.” However, the president of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, Joe Daniels, was fine with the freak show: “What the families need most and what the public needs most is a memorial they can come to to pay their respects at.” The hubris of this creep. He is going to tell the 911 family members what they need. National September 11 Memorial and Museum director Alice Greenwald said the plan was just like what they do in…Cambodia and Rwanda: “When you go to the genocide museum in Phnom Penh, when you go to genocide museums all around Rwanda, there have been decisions in those places to present corpses, skulls, evidence of human remains.” Greenwald’s grotesque equivalence between what we ought to do with what they do in Third World countries is indicative of the mindset of the soulless elitists who have co-opted the narrative and traffic in the dead of 9/11. These grossly overpaid bureaucrats should be fired. Daniels pocketed $371,307 after receiving hefty raises three years in a row — 28 percent in 2006, followed by 12 percent and 6 percent. Greenwald made $351,000, and capital planning Vice President Joan Gerner soaked up $337,143 before leaving last spring. Development director Cathy Blaney raked in $322,292. She is a full-time foundation employee, and yet she also worked last year as a fund-raiser for the election campaign of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Where did all this money come from? Donations from unsuspecting Americans, school children and bake sales. Museum publicity material has featured schoolgirls who donated a dollar each to the museum. Donations solicited for the Museum ended up paying for $5.3 million in salaries and benefits for Memorial and Museum employees in 2009. Meanwhile, leading experts in the field agree with the 911 families. One such expert, Dr. Chip Colwell-Chanthaphonh, whom the Times identifies as “an expert on the repatriation of Native American remains at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science,” noted that when bodies have been put on display in other exhibitions, everyone involved signed a consent form. But none of these 9/11 family members have given consent to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Museum officials have even contacted opponents of the plan. Dr. Colwell-Chanthaphonh recounts that “they said we were being manipulated by the advocacy groups, that there was another side to the story and that we needed to talk to them.” How depraved are these tyrants? These families want their loved ones’ remains respected, and these grossly overpaid bureaucrats call them “advocacy groups.” Read the rest here. He attacked Tasso da Silveira school, where some 400 students ages 9-14 were in classes. [...] Beltrami described the letter as 'the words of a person who no longer believes in anything, full of sentences that made no sense and references to Islamic fundamentalism.' Huh? Roselane de Oliveira, a sister of the attacker, told Rio de Janeiro radio station Band News that the young man 'was very strange.' We are being led by the evil and the inhumane. It was an anti-tank missile so the bus was the target. Deliberately targeted a school bus. I do not know how Israel will respond, but it is rational to restate the obvious: there is no such thing as disproportionate force when responding to a missile attack on a school bus. Israel unleashed airstrikes against Hamas targets across the border as well as tank fire that killed a 50-year-old civilian outside his home and wounded nine other people, Palestinian medics said. The sudden outbreak of violence illustrated the fragile situation along the Israel-Gaza border, where small bouts of violence can quickly escalate into heavy-scale warfare. After a two-year lull, tensions have been rising between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza over the past few weeks. From Israel's perspective, Thursday's attack was the most serious of this period. Israel's defense minister, Ehud Barak, ordered the army to respond quickly and said he held the Hamas militant group, which rules Gaza, responsible for the violence. A small militant faction known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility for the attack. Lawmaker Criticizes Controversial Muslim Group for 2009 Fundraising Letter to Qaddafi FOX A letter from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, to Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi has added fuel to criticisms of the controversial group and what its critics say are some dubious fundraising tactics. In the letter, obtained by Fox News and dated Sept. 23, 2009, CAIR executive director Nihad Awad asks Qaddafi for funding for a CAIR-related project. Qaddafi was in New York attending the United Nations General Assembly. Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., cited the letter Wednesday at a House Appropriations sub-committee hearing, during which Wolf asked FBI Director Robert Mueller about the FBI's relationship with CAIR. Mueller replied there "is no formal relationship with CAIR." A translation of the letter, written originally in Arabic, says in part, "I am pleased to send to Your Excellency in my name most solemn assurances of thanks and appreciation for the efforts you exert in the service of Islam, Muslims and all mankind through your initiative to teach Islam, spread the culture of Islam, and solve disputes, for which you are known internationally." This was long before the uprising in Libya this year, with international calls for Qaddafi to step down after a brutal crackdown on dissent that has escalated into a civil war with rebel forces. But Wolf said CAIR's 2009 letter still was written with the full knowledge of the regime's brutal treatment of its opponents and its deplorable human rights record, as well as its long history of acts of international terrorism. And the cCongressman said the letter showed that Awad was in the process of setting up the Muslim Peace Foundation and seeking to raise $15 million. The letter ends by thanking Qaddafi for his "generous support." Wolf said it was his understanding that Awad had made repeated attempts to solicit funding from Qadaffi and other foreign sources, and he asked Mueller if the FBI was aware of CAIR's outreach to Qadaffi and if the group had received funds from the Libyan regime. "I'll have to get back to you on that," Mueller said. "I am not familiar myself at this point, but we may." It was late March that the Investigative Project on Terrorism released a report that quoted a Libyan news website that reported that CAIR officials, including Awad had met with Qaddafi in September 2009. They had asked him then to "underwrite a program to distribute 1 million copies of the Quran to government officials and the general public in America." But CAIR spokesman, Ibrahim Hooper, told Fox News that the organization didn't receive any money from the Libyan government. "A number of community leaders and organizations were invited to a meeting in New York, at which support was sought for an initiative, unrelated to CAIR, to promote peace and mutual understanding," Hooper said. "That single meeting mirrored the actions of the Bush and Obama administrations." Hooper also noted that "CAIR was one of the first American organizations to call for a no-fly zone to protect Libyan civilians." Steve Emerson, the executive director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, called it "hypocritical" for CAIR to "ask for funds from Qaddafi given that they've just condemned him." "Their transgressions are multiple some of them fall into immorality, some into illegality," Emerson told Fox News. As for CAIR raising funds abroad, Emerson says it's legal to raise money but must be reported on the group's annual 990 tax form. However, Emerson said if they were to work at the "direction or control" of a foreign donor they could very well be violating the Foreign Agent Registration Act. Hooper would not respond to Fox News' questions on whether CAIR receives funding from foreign donors, but he would say that CAIR works with the FBI on "an almost daily basis on civil rights issues." The area will be closed to all but staff and family members of victims. The public will see only a stone wall, bearing a quote from Virgil: "No day shall erase you from the memory of time." Elsewhere, the museum will include photo portraits of the victims, with biographical information, recordings from relatives, videos, personal belongings - whatever families choose to share to help commemorate loved ones lost on 9/11 and in the first Trade Center bombing. MORPHING MOSQUE MEDIA: GROUND ZERO MOSQUE NARRATIVE GOES SECULAR
With light blue eyes and reddish, curly hair, snazzy suits and upwardly mobile ambitions, El-Gamal comes across like a typical New York mashup of cultures and religions. His first real estate partner was a Hasidic Jew, and even now when he's searching for a perfect expression, he's as likely to use Yiddish as Arabic.
On a recent Friday afternoon, El-Gamal, 38, paced around his sunny Manhattan office describing like an excited teenager how he got into wheeling and dealing property.
Suddenly a voice crackled from his computer.
It was a muezzin's call, programmed to remind him to pray five times a day. But instead of dropping to his knees in front of his desk, as he usually does, he headed for his buildings at 45-51 Park Place, now the most controversial prayer space in America.
[...]
Polls showed that most New Yorkers didn't want a mosque nearby even as Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg defended Muslims' right to pray where they choose, saying, "There is no neighborhood in this city off-limits to God's love and mercy."
Although most of the opposition focused on the project's spiritual leader, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, El-Gamal also gained attention, including a profile on "60 Minutes."
Some labeled him slimy, greedy, arrogant and dishonest.
Pamela Geller, a conservative activist who led opposition through her blog, Atlas Shrugs, said El-Gamal was a "front man" for the money behind the project and for "Islamic supremacists" who believe in the tradition of erecting a mosque near the site of a war victory.
"It's been sold as a mosque of healing when it has the opposite effect," Geller said recently.
Timothy Brown, a firefighter who lost 93 friends on Sept. 11 and is suing to block the project, called El-Gamal a "bad apple."
"For him to keep shoving this down the families' throats, what does it show you about this man?" Brown said.
But El-Gamal has kept going.
He applied for nonprofit status for the project, and sought a $5-million grant from a public agency created to heal the area. He is recruiting Muslim and non-Muslim members for separate boards for the prayer space and community center, and has begun negotiating with banks for financing.
[...]
Even before they parted ways, Abdul Rauf had left most of the responsibilities for the project to El-Gamal while he concentrated on a broader interfaith message. "Sharif did the design concept, the floor plan," Abdul Rauf said. "He pushed it ahead."
Back at his office, El-Gamal's face reddened as he recounted efforts to get him to retreat. At the height of the controversy evenDonald Trump chimed in, offering to pay him a bonus to move.
"Are we supposed to move so we can create a Muslim-free zone, Muslim-free blocks?" El-Gamal asked heatedly. "That makes no sense. … What happened on 9/11 was a criminal act of mass murder that had nothing to do with my people or my community. And it's about time we put a clear line in the sand."
He was born in a Methodist hospital to a Polish Catholic mother and Egyptian Muslim father who divorced over religion. After his mother died of cancer when he was 5, El-Gamal and his brother lived with their father, an immigrant who was a rising Chemical Bank executive.
He's lived in different parts of New York as well as abroad — in Liberia briefly as a toddler and in Egypt from ages 11 to 18, with a one-year break on Long Island, where he played high school football.
"We ultimately went to Egypt because my father wanted us to understand our identity," El-Gamal said. "I went kicking and screaming."
In Alexandria, El-Gamal spoke English and played water polo at an international school run by Americans, while at home he spoke Arabic and was immersed in Egyptian culture. The family prayed at elegant mosques and fasted for Ramadan.
Memories of those mosques and his exposure to the Muslim world would stir his yearning for a dignified place to pray and commune in New York.
El-Gamal returned to the United States for college, but dropped out to work for a financial broker. "I was really lost, and in part it was cultural confusion. You're American but at the same time you don't have your community," he said.
Before he married and settled down, El-Gamal admitted, he led a fast Manhattan life that included a DUI and disorderly conduct arrests. He eventually found his calling in real estate development.
On the morning of the World Trade Center attack, like hundreds of New Yorkers, he felt compelled to rush to the scene to help. Yet in the months that followed, El-Gamal became enraged as he saw all Muslims being held accountable for the attack by 19 radical Islamists.
"I really wanted to understand my identity, thinking, 'How dare people say that about me and my religion,' " he said.
He started going to a prayer center located for decades in a second-floor loft space on Warren Street, also near the attack site.
"Muslims had been praying for years on those streets near the World Trade Center," he said. "But I was really shocked that this 5,000-square-foot loft where the paint was peeling, carpets were dirty, bathrooms inadequate was the representation of my religion in Lower Manhattan. … The mosques I'd been used to were magnificent houses that you'd be fascinated by even if you were non-Muslim."
One Friday in 2005 he heard a sermon by Abdul Rauf in a tiny prayer space on West Broadway.
"It was almost like I was now listening to a professor, in perfect English, giving something my soul had longed for," El-Gamal said. He told Abdul Rauf, "It's not really fair that only 70 people get to hear you."
That same year, after a lengthy search that led him to dozens of potential sites — all rejected by the Warren Street elders — El-Gamal found the Park Place buildings.
They had been vacant since the landing gear from one of the Sept. 11 planes torpedoed through the roof. El-Gamal's plan calls for a 13-story community center, run by Muslims but open to all, with a theater, pool, day-care center, culinary institute and prayer space. El-Gamal and Abdul Rauf said it would be a way of pushing back against the image of Muslims as extremists.
After four years of negotiations, El-Gamal bought the property for $4.8 million.
"At that point I wanted to — how do you say in Yiddish, 'create a marriage'? — oh, yeah, make a shidduch between Imam Rauf and the beautiful people from Warren Street," El-Gamal said.
That never quite happened. Some congregants flocked to the first floor of Park Place while others rented space nearby. Today, four mosques exist within walking distance of the former World Trade Center.
With the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 just months away, El-Gamal is preparing for renewed criticism. (Said Geller: "We will be there on the streets if they grant taxpayer money from a 9/11 fund to build this ground zero mosque.")
But El-Gamal has also set his sights beyond — to a groundbreaking in four to five years, and to accompanying his two young daughters, who take swim lessons at a Jewish center on the Upper West Side, where he lives, to the pool on Park Place.
"I have been trying for eight years now to help my community," El-Gamal said. "It's just not in my DNA to give up."Thursday, April 07, 2011
DONALD TRUMP'S INTERVIEW WITH MEREDITH VIEIRA
Read more at PoliticoPANTANO'S PUPPIES: RADICAL LEFTWING HATERS ATTACK!
When Jill Pantano responded to a request to rescue puppies from a litter in Charlotte whose owner could not manage the dozen baby animals, she never thought she would be sued over it. But then politics entered the equation - the silly season has begun early this year!
Jill Pantano, wife of congressional candidate Ilario Pantano, has rescued animals before and was eager to help. The owner of the puppies was paid by the Pantano family and is happy that the dogs are in a good home. Case closed, right? But instead of thanking Mrs. Pantano, radical animal rights activists in New Jersey have cursed her, harassed her, and are threatening a lawsuit - all because of her husband’s conservative politics.
The activist that has targeted the Pantano family is Ms. Jacquie York from Montclair, New Jersey. She has left the Pantanos threatening voicemail messages, has made false claims and false 911 calls to trigger visits from local law enforcement on Pantano’s wife and his mother. Ms. York made these harassing phone calls from 600 miles away in New Jersey with no actualknowledge of or regard for the care that these puppies were receiving with the Pantano family and their two young children.
“These puppies are for my children and their grandmother. They were in need of a home, and we stepped up. We paid for them and are caring for them. My 6 and 8 year old sons have named them 'Jack Jack' and 'Tallulah.' Now, some New Jersey activist with a political score to settle against my husband is ultimately trying to harm my kids. My two boys should not be paying an emotional price for their father’s politics. It makes me sad,” said Jill Pantano. “This activist has a long history in the animal rescue community of bullying dog owners, picking fights with families, and filing frivolous lawsuits. Now, she has left harassing and threatening phone calls for us and others (which we have saved, by the way) although the language is too profane for my kids to hear. I’m not even comfortable transcribing them.”
Merry Pantano, mother of congressional candidate Ilario Pantano, has sent a cease and desist order asking that the harassment be stopped since the puppies were purchased outright from the owner and the activist group has no claim to the animals and no grounds for further harassment. But that didn’t stop Ms. York and the activists in New Jersey that have now hired lawyers in Raleigh and are threatening to sue the Pantanos in a further effort to smear their name. The Pantanos are represented by a Wilmington attorney and have vowed to fight for their puppies and their children.
Ilario Pantano released the following statement: “The facts of the case are simple: the puppies needed to be rescued and my family stepped up. Now an animal rescue group in New Jersey is trying to deny my children these pets because of who I am. We were simply going to adopt the animals, but when liberal activists in New Jersey found out who I was, my conservative beliefs made me a target. Instead of listening to more of her harassing and threatening phone calls, we decided to purchase the puppies outright from their lawful owner. Why is this harassment and nonsense continuing? Because I am a conservative Christian Republican Marine who hunts, I have been targeted by animal activists that have called my wife and I terrible names and profanities, which we have on a recorded voice mail. This activist has literally threatened to 'smear my family’s good name all over the internet.' Sadly, this isn’t about the puppies we bought for my children, this is about the politics of personal destruction. Please pray for my family as we endure yet another round of slings and arrows from folks 600 miles away from Wilmington that seem intent on harassing my family and hurting my children and our good name. I didn’t know that you had to be a Democrat to adopt a puppy. ”
