The Russian military marched yesterday in field gear instead of parade uniforms during celebrations of the victory over the Nazi Germany in the Second World War. Even during the original V-Day parade in 1945 the Soviet troops that had the honor to appear on the Red Square took the time to shine the high boots. Sixty six years later the Russian military dressed the 20,000 marching men like they are about to be deployed to the war front two minutes after they turn behind the corner.
The contrast with the last year V-Day parade is startling. In 2010 US, UK, Polish and French troops marched for the first time on the Red Square alongside the representatives from former Soviet countries. There was pretend feeling of friendship in the air. The world is very different a year later – and so are the parades.
The European Union and the United States are shaken by debt crises measured in trillions of euro and dollars. The western economies are walking a balancing act on a thin rope over a lava pit and China is waiting for somebody’s wrong step. Tons of money are being printed, calling the ghosts of hyperinflation to haunt the fears of investors. The financial chaos is stirred additionally by bailouts that are flying in all directions and may never be repaid (most of them are coming from countries with no money to countries without any money). All this is happening on the background of the collapsing Greater Middle East.
The death of Osama bin Laden is fascinating, but the death of the myth about the existence of widespread moderate Islam may have much bigger consequences for America.
