How much more evidence does National Jewish Democratic Council need that Hamas is not interested in a "lasting peace". Duh???? Where are there brains?
The truly terrifying thing is there are still people who actually believe and follow the statements put forth by such groups such as the NJDC. And there are politicians who are on the same delusional and destructive page.
-------
Here is the National Jewish Democratic Council statement on Hamas-Fatah alliance:

And here’s about the organization’s president:
David Harris serves as the President of the National Jewish Democratic Council, having previously worked as NJDC’s Deputy Executive Director for seven years. Mr. Harris also served in Washington as the Executive Director of the Israel on Campus Coalition; as the Director of Governmental and Public Affairs for the American Jewish Congress; and as Washington Representative for the Israel Policy Forum, among other positions. Mr. Harris began his career in electoral politics working as a campaign manager during the 1992 congressional campaign cycle, going on to work with the late Senator Paul Simon.
Here is the NJDC statement on Hamas-Fatah alliance:
----------
The power of delusion is truly remarkable.
Just days after the Hamas leadership condemned the killing of Osama bin Laden and praised him as a "holy warrior," the National Jewish Democratic Council pressed Israel's government to forge peace with a new Fatah-Hamas alliance, saying they hoped "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not see this as a reason to be deterred from presenting bold steps towards a lasting peace."
Huh?
How much more evidence do they need that Hamas is not interested in a "lasting peace"? On top of the praise of a mass murder who took the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans, how about the steady drumbeat of statements since their founding in 1987 that Israel is illegitimate, has no place in the Middle East and will ultimately be destroyed? How about their charter that justifies the killing of Jews and states that it is a religious duty to liberate "Palestine"?
And is Fatah much better? What about the "armed wing" of the Fatah movement making a statement Tuesday condemning the death of bin Laden and promising that they will continue his work? How about a recent Pew Research finding that Palestinian Arabs are the biggest supporters of Al Qaeda in the Arab world? Or how about the P.A. itself, which on Yom Hashoah compared Jews to Nazis and said the IDF was conducting Mengele-like experiments on Palestinian prisoners?
When does this insanity stop? When does this hope for peace -- that we all share -- finally meet reality? The Palestinians clearly don't want peace. They keep on telling us over and over and over again. Why aren't Jewish Democrats listening?
The most disheartening news of all in the NJDC announcement is that it is likely a preview of how President Obama will ultimately react to the Fatah-Hamas alliance. On these pages over the last few days, we had urged the president to put Osama bin Laden's allies on notice by sending them a tough message, namely that the United States does not tolerate terrorism or antisemitism in any form.
The NJDC ends its statement by saying it is "hopeful" that "this reported accord will put pressure on the most extreme elements of Palestinian society to lay down their weapons and end this generation’s old conflict. As part of this, Hamas must renounce violence, abide by past agreements and recognize Israel’s right to exist."
We, too, are hopeful that in the future the NJDC will choose reality over fantasy.
