Tax Freedom Day

Today is tax freedom day. We've all spent the first 149 days of this year working to pay taxes, working for the Government. Until today everything you've earned has gone into the taxman's pocket; only now you can start working to support yourself and your family. Though you might want to set something aside to pay off the huge deficit the politicians are running.

We know that there are lots of pressures on your finances. But we really depend on the backing of thousands of supporters like you to keep the TPA's campaign for lower taxes and better value for money going.

Over the last year, the Government has taken up TPA recommendations that have saved taxpayers billions; we've pointed out waste at councils from non-jobs to excessive mileage rates for staff so they can limit the impact of cuts on frontline services; we secured spending transparency with the publication of data from central and local government so taxpayers can see how their money is spent; our campaigning has supported welfare reforms which will mean taxpayers aren't paying billions to trap claimants in dependency; and we kept the pressure up as some MPs started to be sent to prison for fiddling their expenses.

There is still lots of work to do. With rising debt interest payments, recent official data showed that spending hasn't even started falling yet. Taxes like VAT are going up and making everything we buy in the shops more expensive. It is starting to dawn on politicians that people aren't going to keep accepting the bill for their profligacy, that Tax Freedom Day can’t keep falling later and later every year.

Every day the TPA's hard working staff and brilliant volunteers are hunting down waste and working to make the voice of taxpayers' heard in Westminster. But that isn't possible without funding and we need to confront organisations like the big public sector unions who have thousands of activists paid for at taxpayers' expense.
