Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has urged Britain to hold talks on the future of the Malvinas Islands.

She made the proposal for talks over the sovereignty of the Malvinas, which the British call the Falkland Islands, on the 29th anniversary of the end of Malvinas war.

On the anniversary, President Kirchner handed an Argentine ID card to a British man, James Peck, who was born in the the Malvinas Islands but now lives in Buenos Aires, the state-run BBC reported on Friday.

Peck's father fought for the British in 1982, when Britain defeated Argentina, and thus retained control over the islands. The Malvinas war left about 900 soldiers and civilians dead.

When the issue of the islands was raised in Westminster this week, British Prime Minister David Cameron told the House of Commons, "As long as the Falkland Islands want to be sovereign British territory, they should remain sovereign British territory -- full stop, end of story."

But Kirchner spoke of Argentina's "undeniable sovereignty over the Malvinas" and said Cameron's comment was an "expression of mediocrity and almost of stupidity."

She added that Britain "in the 21st century continues to be a crude colonial power in decline."

Kirchner also claims that the islands unquestionably belong to Argentina since France sold them to Spain in 1767. Some comment that Britain had control over the islands long before the country of Argentina came into existence.

It seemed that the stakes had been raised by the apparent discovery of oil off the coast, although the most recent drilling attempts have failed.
