Nabil Sha'th: We Will Not Recognize Israel as the State of the Jewish People

In two interviews with the Arab Israeli weekly Kul Al-Arab and the Jerusalem-based daily Al-Quds, Nabil Sha'th, Fatah Central Committee member and international relations commissioner, said that the Palestinians would not accept a peace plan with two states for two peoples that included recognition of Israel as the state of the Jewish people. Rather, he said, they would only accept a definition of Israel as the state of the "Israeli people" – which would include Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

Sha'th stated that unlike the 1947 U.N. Partition Plan, which had harmed the Palestinian people, the Palestinians' plans to appeal to the U.N. for recognition of a Palestinian state would not harm Israel. He added that the Palestinians preferred the French peace initiative to that of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Sha'th expressed support for initiatives for organizing a million unarmed Palestinians to mass along Israel's borders as part of the Palestinian popular struggle. He stressed that he was working toward returning the Palestinian refugees to all of Palestine, and that the defense of the Arab Israelis must be at the top of the Palestinian agenda.

Muhammad Dahlan: "Brother Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] made his decision [to expel me] about a year ago, because he cannot tolerate any criticism, any advice, any comment, or any participation in the decision-making, regarding politics, Fatah, the negotiations, or finances. This has become perfectly clear since the rift [with Hamas], which made Abbas feel that he should have a monopoly on everything."

2995.JPG

Following are excerpts from an interview with former Israeli Knesset member Azmi Bishara, which aired on Al-Arabiya TV on June 16, 2011:

Azmi Bishara: "[The Americans] have the audacity to tell us to learn [democracy] from Poland. Brother, this is something I don't understand. These people inherited a democracy, but who says they are democratic? Who says that Clinton and Obama can give us a lesson in democracy? I can read Thomas Jefferson and learn about democracy, because he established democracy in his country. But did Obama establish a democracy?!"
