Good News, Bad News for Turkey's AKP (and Obama)

Understanding Obama's Marxism

Monday, 13 June 2011
Daniel Greenfield:
In France, American embassies and consulates have been directed to “empower” Muslims and push for the passage of “social reforms” that will benefit them. In the UK, American diplomats were directed to again “empower” Muslims and made outreach to them a top priority. In Israel, the US consulate in Jerusalem caters only to Muslims and does its best to pretend that Jews and Israel don’t even exist. And when Obama visited Greece, what else did he do but push the political and religious authorities to open more mosques and Islamic schools. America’s own interests and our obligations to our allies have been put aside to focus on a single goal of overriding importance. Pandering to the Muslim world. It’s as if we have no other foreign policy goal anymore beyond keeping Muslims happy.
As expected, Turkey's so-called "Islamist-rooted" ruling party--pro-Iran, crypto-Islamists seeking to put Muslim headscarves on every Turkish woman--won the national election. With nearly all votes counted, the deceptively named Justice and Development Party (AKP) won 50% of the popular vote and 326 out of 550 parliamentary seats. But the party needed at least 367 seats to give it the power to unilaterally rewrite Turkey's secular (military-era) constitution.
Back in the USA, the mood among Obama's pro-Islamist advisors must be one of celebration mixed with disappointment. Seeing the AKP's plan for Turkey as a model for the kind ofIslamocracies they hope to install across the Middle East (and across "the Muslim world" for that matter), people like Samantha Power and Zbigniew Brzezinski would have preferred a different outcome, one that could have led to a speedier political transformation of a strategically situated Muslim land.
But what kind of Marxist is he? That is the key question. Does he have a well-thought-out ideology; if so, what is it?
The answer to the above is that Obama seems to be both a postmodern (all realities aresocial constructs) European Third World Socialist ... an apparent admirer of Frantz Fanon, who extolled "purifying," revolutionary violence by rising-up, pre-capitalist and thus supposedly inherently noble Third World peoples acting out their destinies, in sync with history's "moral arc" ... instead of the boring, old, industrial proletariat ... and a vulgar Marxist, meaning someone who believes that the capitalist system is fundamentally unfair, that history proceeds through stages, each of which is characterized by a specific economic system and oppressive ruling class, and that workers are a fundamentally homogeneous class. Give them good jobs and they will abandon their "faith and their guns," as Obama infamously suggested during the 2008 campaign, provided, of course, that their religion is Christianity and not Islam, for the latter, according to his updated, Third World Socialist view, is the ascendant religion of the global poor, thus synonymous with the working class and underclass--the proletariat and the sub-proletariat--and the key to turning the Third World/"Muslim World" into One World.
If all that is as clear as mud, dear reader, it should be, because Obama is ideologically and philosophically the most alien and un-American President to ever inhabit the White House. Among his most influential advisors are people who feel more at home with foreigners wearing Muslim headscarves and turbans and Arab keffiyehs than with ordinary Americans wearing, say, baseball caps, or Christian crosses, or--Gasp!--Stars of David. Put simply and mildly, Obama and his henchpersons prefer the Arab Street over Main Street.
The really interesting thing is how and why much of Wall Street--so many members of the globalizing power elite, including establishment Republican (In Name Only) types--have supported Obama's pro-Islamist policies, specifically, his appeasement of and attempts to actually align with nuclear-arming Islamist Iran, Islamizing Turkey, "moderate" Taliban, and Islamism (rightwing political Islam--a form of clerical fascism) in general, with the exception of Al Qaeda and its affiliates and so-called irreconcilable Taliban. But that's another story.
