Technological developments could lead to a reduction in battlefield
casualties and create a strategic deterrent

"In the future, we will see robotic platforms that will take the place of
fighters in the field," Colonel Nessim Levy, head of the motorized systems
department of the Ground Forces Technology Brigade, said on Tuesday (May 31)
at the 2011 Military and Aviation conference.
Col. Levy talked about a future in which platforms were developed for
logistical needs, mainly to help the IDF control populated areas for
extended periods of time.
"The goal is to reach territory with controlling platforms that will help us
reduce casualties amongst our forces," Col. Levy said. According to him, the
platforms would particularly aid in the neutralization of threats in
structures in built-up areas, a complex operation in terms of the
coordination and application of forces.
Col. Levy emphasized that the development and use of these technologies
would not only reduce the number of casualties amongst IDF forces, but would
also create a strategic deterrent.
"The IDF's observation capabilities are becoming more and more enhanced," he
said, noting that IDF technological development is today focused on
designing tiny robots with the capability to dismantle explosive devices and
mines in built-up areas during combat.
"The IDF's vision is to develop a system that fits a wide range of missions
in the field, with the possibility of an effective operational capability
that will produce a tactical advantage, deterrence and a reduction in
casualties," Col. Levy said.
Col. Levy said that the replacement of soldiers in the field with robots is
still far in the future - in his opinion more than a decade.

Magic Wand anti-missile system to soon undergo full test
The Magic Wand mid-range anti-missile system could be operational in the
next few years
Date: 01/06/2011, 12:21 PM Author: Avihai Chiim IDF
The Magic Wand mid-range anti-missile system will soon undergo a full test
and could become operational within the next few years, Pini Yungman of
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems said at the 2011 Military and Aviation
Conference on Tuesday (May 31).
The Magic Wand system "successfully deals with threats that no other system
in the world is capable of neutralizing," Yungman said.
Yungman said that Israel faces threats from long and short-range missiles as
well as cruise missiles.
The Magic Wand system will operate in conjunction with other anti-missile
systems, including the Iron Dome, Arrow and Patriot systems.
The Magic Wand has the capability to cope with both ground and air-based
threats, including aircraft.
"The state of Israel cannot afford to be attacked by enemy aircraft, and the
Magic Wand will provide it the exact protection needed to deal with this,"
Yungman said.
Yungman said that operational tests run on the Magic Wand system in recent
months have proven its quality and effectiveness.
Congressional c'tee backs increase in Arrow fundingBy HILARY LEILA KRIEGER JERUSALEM POST CORRESPONDE

WASHINGTON – A key congressional committee wants to increase the funding for US-Israeli missile defense programs to a historic high in the coming year.
The US House defense appropriations subcommittee on Wednesday approved increasing missile defense funds to $235.7 million in 2012, up from $217.7 million in 2011.
RELATED:
The aid would go to the Arrow 2, Arrow 3 and David’s Sling projects.
The subcommittee decision is a preliminary one, as the entire bill has to be voted on by the entire committee and no timeline has been set for its consideration.
Appropriations bills are so contentious in the divided Congress that last year’s federal budget was never approved.
Still, given the US fiscal crisis and efforts to slash budgets, pro-Israel activists have been pleased to see robust efforts to aid Israel’s defense continued by both Democrats and Republicans.
“Given America’s significant budget challenges, every single dollar we are expending on behalf of the US taxpayer must be given the highest level of scrutiny, including funds appropriated toward the defense of the United States and its allies,” committee member Rep. Steve Rothman (D-New Jersey) said following the funding approval.
“It is a mark of the importance of these jointly developed missile defense programs – Arrow 2, Arrow 3 and David’s Sling – that they were all robustly funded by our subcommittee.”

(Israelnationalnews.com) Israel has arrested the Speaker of the Palestinian Authority's parliament, the Palestinian Legislative Council, who is also a senior member of the Hamas terrorist organization.
Aziz al-Dweik was detained Tuesday with two other PA legislators, according to the Chinese Xinhua news agency.
He was stopped by IDF soldiers at a checkpoint while trying to cross into Israel from Judea and Samaria.
This is not the first time that al-Dweik has been arrested by Israel. He was first detained soon after IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was taken hostage by Hamas terrorists on June 25, 2006.
At present, Israel allegedly is holding 13 Hamas lawmakers, according to the news agency.
Shalit is still being held hostage in Gaza, and his whereabouts and condition remain unknown. Hamas is demanding the release of at least 1,000 PA Arab prisoners in exchange for the soldier, including numerous terrorist murderers.
At least four PLC legislative members of Hamas have been expelled from Jerusalem and have had their identification cards -- issued to Arab residents of eastern Jerusalem -- revoked for breach of loyalty to the State of Israel. The four appealed to the Supreme Court of Israel -- which they do not recognize and which they despise -- in order to attempt to win back their right to stay in Israel.
