Joining me was the warrior mom, Bev Perlson, Band of Mothers, and Katie O'Malley (center) of Any Street. The three of us have been inseparable. Seriously kick ace. These women fight the great fight every day, and I am proud to know them and stand with them shoulder to shoulder. Speaking of warrior women, huge thanks to Johana Von Hohenzollern of Any Street, along with Danita Kilcullen of the Fort Lauderdale Tea party patriots (and the various Republican clubs of South Florida), for putting this weekend together. It was an amazing crowd. There were folks there whom I had met when they came to our rally at Ground Zero on September 11th. They trekked all the way from Florida to stand against that mosquestrosity. These were the kind of extraordinary people I spent the afternoon with. It was terrific to see Adam Hasner, as well as Mike McCallister, a war veteran, both running for US Senate, in attendance. The inspirational Pastor Dozier was there as well. Abdullah Mohammed, 51, of 125th Street, was at the Harlem supermarket yesterday morning when he started arguing loudly at the customer service desk with William Perry, 70, a former truck driver. Perry was at the desk buying Lotto tickets when Mohammed stepped on his foot, irking the older man, according to his older brother, Charles Perry. Mohammed, who was clad in a peach linen suit, was booted out of the store, but stormed back in minutes later and cornered Perry in the meat aisle, two employees said. He then allegedly whipped out a razor and slashed Perry across the neck. "People ran out of the store. One guy was screaming, ‘Oh my God, I’ve never seen anything like this,’" said Rafael Feliciano, a repairman who witnessed the melee. A heroic store employee tackled Mohammed and subdued him until the police responded to the meat aisle melee, cops said. Mohammed was dragged out of the supermarket screaming "at everyone around him," Feliciano said. Mohammed was arrested and charged with assault in the first degree. Perry was taken to Harlem Hospital and was likely to survive his injuries, police said. "He’s a coward and ... didn’t fight fair," Charles Perry said from his brother's hospital bed. Cathedral in Nigeria destroyed by extremist attacks Catholic News Agency Maiduguri, Nigeria, June 9 (CNA) .- An extremist Islamic group is being held responsible for a series of recent attacks in Nigeria, which have left 16 dead and destroyed the Catholic Cathedral of St. Patrick in the northern capital city of Maiduguri. "St. Patrick's Cathedral was seriously damaged, windows and doors destroyed, the whole building was shaken to its foundations by the violence of the explosion," said Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme of Maiduguri. On June 7, an armed group suspected to be members of Boko Haram set off a bomb at the cathedral as well as two police stations. The damage is the latest in a series of coordinated attacks by Boko Haram, which claims to seek a more widespread application of sharia (Islamic law) in Africa's most populated nation. The extremist group – with a name that translates to "Western education is a sin" in the Haussa language – has carried out almost daily attacks in and around Maiduguri in recent months. Its targets have been politicians, law enforcement, and religious and traditional rulers opposed to its ideology. "The situation in Maiduguri is very tense," Bishop Doeme told Fides news on June 8, recalling that only "two weeks ago, another Catholic church was the target of an attack with explosives, as well as a secondary school." On June 6, an Islamic religious leader, who opposed the cult, was killed in an attack in Biu, a town south of Maiduguri. The National Association for Change (NAC) is a loose affiliation of anti-Mubarak groups in Egypt. Mohamed ElBaradei is nominally in charge of it, and the Muslim Brotherhood is involved in it, but it contains numerous non-Brotherhood entities as well. Hassan Daly, a 52-year-old described as a "devout Muslim," plowed his cab into a crowd on a sidewalk in San Diego, injuring over 24 people. Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar explicitly grounded his hit-and-run in the teachings of the Koran. Munir Muthana told the police who arrested him that "the Muslims will fix this country." Islamic supremacism comes to the Olympics. *sigh* Once again, anywhere Western law and Islamic law conflict, it is always Western law that must give way -- and worse still, it is the non-Muslims who do the bidding of the Islamic supremacists. Kulsoom Abdullah, a 35-year-old weightlifter born in the United States, wants to wear the hijab instead of the regulation uniform that is required. She took up the sport and qualified to compete in her first national competition last year but refused to wear the required garb. So now the Muslim Brotherhood group CAIR is going to sue to change the dedicated rules of sport. One weightlifter lamented, "While I sympathize with the reason she wants an exception, this is an issue about the integrity of the sport. I have competed in both powerlifting and olympic lifting. Supportive equipment that increases the weight lifted is a BIG problem in powerlifting. Squat suits can add up to 200 pound to a competition squat. Olympic lifting has worked hard to keep supportive gear out of the sport. The reason for the tight rules on uniform is to keep out supportive gear and make it easy to catch people who try to cheat and use it. Something as simply as bunching up material beind the knees or an extra tight leotard under the uniform can increase the weight lifted and the consistency of a lifter. This is especially true at lower weights (under 120kilos)." And do read the comments on this article. Few sympathizers, if any. Folks are fed up. A 35-year-old weightlifter is battling to be able to compete in the sport she loves while wearing a hijab instead of the body-hugging uniform that's required. Kulsoom Abdullah, who was born in the United States to Pakistani parents, discovered weightlifting at her gym, Crossfit, in Atlanta in 2008. She entered her first open competition last year, and was thrilled to find out that she was actually pretty good in the competitive sport. She can lift 70 kilos (about 154 pounds) to her shoulders, and 60 kilos (or about 132 pounds) over her head, in a move called the "clean-and-jerk." Last December, she qualified for the American Open Weightlifting Championships, which would have been her first national competition. But when her coaches asked whether she would be able to wear her modified uniform--which covers everything but her face, hands, and feet--the organizers told told them no. Abdullah talked to some lawyer friends, who told her that other athletes had won their bids to wear different clothing for religious reasons. So she tried again, this time personally writing to USA Weightlifting with her request, and asking the group if it could compromise on a uniform. "It is like saying, if you are different, you can not compete," she wrote on her web site. "I am not asking people to change, I am just asking to participate and be able to dress the way I do." Now, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim advocacy group, is taking up Abdullah's cause, and trying to lobby weightlifting organizations to revise their rules in time for her to compete in a July national competition. CAIR officials are arguing that USA Weightlifting is in violation of the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, which forbids sports bodies from discriminating based on "race, color, religion, sex, age, or national origin." Not allowing Abdullah to wear her hijab is discrimination, CAIR maintains. USA Weightlifting told The Lookout in a statement that "uniforms must not cover either the knees or the elbows because the judges must be able to see that the lifter has locked out his or her knees and elbows in order for the lift to be deemed completed." The IWF will discuss Abdullah's request at a June 26 meeting in Penang, Malaysia. United States Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Jones says the group is committed to being "inclusive" but that it's up to the IWF to decide if the modified uniform would provide a "competitive advantage." While the weightlifting powers-that-be have decided against her for now, Abdullah says she never feels out of place when training six days a week or when in open competitions with other lifters. Her religous garb outfit does not allow the judges to verify that she has completed a move. So she can't compete. It would give her an unfair advantage. End of story. But no, Muslims believe in supremacist advantages, but that doesn't mean we have to submit. This is exactly the same supremacist strategy used by Muslim Wal-Mart cashiers and Target cashiers who won't handle halal meat, or the Muslim woman suing Disney to change the dress code they have on place in 1957: they sue to impose Islam on the secular marketplace. Lahore, Pakistan, JUNE 7, 2011 (Zenit.org).- An Islamist politcal party in Pakistan has called on the country's Supreme Court to investigate "blasphemous" and "pornographic" passages of the Bible, appealing to Pakistan's controversial blasphemy law. In response, the Catholic bishop of Lahore has appealed to the faithful to resist this provocation and asked for prayer and patience.
The Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islami party held a press conference at a mosque in the city of Lahore in which the party leader, Maulana Abdul Rauf Farooqi, criticized certain passages of the bible that portrayed some prophets as sinners, guilty of "a variety of moral crimes, which undermine the sanctity of the holy figures."
Although Islam considers Old and New Testament figures to be part of their own spiritual tradition, Farooqi objects to their portrayal in the Bible as sinners, citing the story of King David's adultery and facilitation of the killing of Bathsheba's husband as an example.
The party has informally petitioned the Supreme Court of Pakistan to declare certain Biblical passages "blasphemous" and also announced that their lawyers would appeal for a formal banning of the Bible in Pakistan if the Court fails to meet their demands. Farooqi declared the campaign to be a direct response to the controversial Gainsville, Florida, pastor Terry Jones' Koran-burning episode in March.
That same month a Pakistani man tried to burn a copy of the Bible in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Lahore but was stopped at the gates by guards and proceeded to burn his copy there.
Even those non-Christians who defended Bibi and criticized the blasphemy law have paid the ultimate price: in January the Governor of Punjab, Salmaan Taseer, was assassinated by his body guard for his support of the law's repeal and for Bibi's pardon.
Benedict XVI has repeatedly called for the law to be repealed, describing it as a pretext for violence against minorities. "The tragic murder of the governor of Punjab shows the urgent need to make progress in this direction," the Pope said in January.
Fear and emotions are running high following the party's press release, Bishop Shaw reported, but he is cautioning his flock to take the prudent path: "Problems like this are happening one after the other. If we give the right response, the matter will die away just like any other debate that suddenly flares up."CATHEDRAL IN NIGERIA BOMBED BY MUSLIMS
The recent violence adds to the civil strife which broke out across the predominantly Muslim north when the results from the April 16 presidential election showed President Jonathan, a Christian from the south, had won.
Riots have killed at least 500 people in Nigeria after the April elections, with the two northern states of Kaduna and Bauchi states being the hardest hit by violence. An estimated 40,000 people have fled those areas in recent months.
