Landmark End of Life Case

hospital patientThe mother of a brain damaged woman in a “minimally conscious state” (MCS) is seeking a court order to stop her daughter’s life-sustaining treatment. The hearing started this week (on 18 July) and is expected to continue for another six days.

This is a landmark case because nobody has ever asked the court to order the removal of food and water from a patient who is in a MCS. The patient can apparently smile and has occasionally made a comment to nurses. Some people recover from MCS and in some cases go on to lead almost normal lives.

Prayer Point: Please pray for the patient, identified only as “M”, pray for her family and also pray that legal protections would not be compromised.

Growing Number of Medical Students Opposed to Abortion

abortion oppositionA new survey has revealed that growing numbers of medical students are opposed to carrying out abortions.

The survey found that almost a third of students would not perform an abortion for a ‘congenitally malformed’ baby after 24 weeks and a quarter would not perform an abortion for failed contraception before 24 weeks.

The survey also found that almost half believed that doctors should be allowed to refuse to perform any procedure to which they object on moral, cultural or religious grounds, such as prescribing contraception or carrying out abortions.
