Thurs. 28 Jul. 2011 @ 13.25 - Article addressing tensions and extremism in post-Mubarak Egypt notes support for Bin Laden and Hitler. The Times today highlights the many difficulties facing Egypt after the ousting of the Mubarak regime. 'Egypt: disillusioned protesters may turn to violence' notes there are fears that with world attention diverted towards developments elsewhere in the region, the process of change in Egypt could stall - with potentially serious consequences. Of particular worry to many Egyptians, according to the article, is the lack of law and order in the absence of stable government: 'Crime has risen sharply, and in the countryside there is almost no sign of the police, who fled during the revolution after mobs burnt their stations.' This absence of stable government also highlights perhaps the starkest issue in the article - the open expressions of extremism amongst the demonstrators and their supporters. Some protestors glorified Osama bin Laden, and even Adolf Hitler. Thurs. 28 Jul. 2011 @ 14.03 - Representatives from Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah present at Cairo 'resistance' conference this week. Senior figures from the Muslim Brotherhood attended Cairo's 'Founding Conference of the Arab-Islamic Gathering to Support the Option of Resistance', alongside members of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah, according to the Israeli Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center. They were joined at the conference, which was held on Sunday and Monday, by representatives from 14 Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Morocco, Sudan and Jordan. In a speech at the conference, the head of Hamas' international relations department, Osama Hamdan, reiterated that the Islamist group would never recognize Israel: '[T]he [Israeli-Palestinian] conflict will never end unless Israel cease[s] to exist' Minimal reporting of two men hanged by Hamas as media outlets rely on wire services despite multiple permanent correspondents in the region. The Associated Press (AP) wire service yesterday reported that Ihab Ghussein, a spokesman for the Hamas Interior Ministry in the Gaza strip, announced that two men charged in 2004 for spying for Israel, were hanged at dawn. 'Hamas hangs 2 convicted of spying for Israel' by Rizeh Abdul Jawad, notes that the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) has identified the two men as Mahmoud Abu Qenas, 51, and his son, Rami Abu Qenas, 22. The BBC News website provides the only original coverage of the men's executions. Nevertheless, 'Hamas executes Palestinians convicted of collaboration' cites both the AP and Reuters as sources. Notably, it cites the AP's reporting of actions by family members: 'Angry family members of one of the executed men burned tyres and blocked a road in protest, the Associated Press news agency reported.' Tues. 26 Month. 2011 @ 11.59 - Activist uses official Independent blog to blame Norway massacre on alleged pro-Israel support of killer. Writing on his official blog on The Independent, the anti-Israel activist Jody McIntyre links the massacre in Norway to the pro-Palestinian sentiments of some of the victims, and the apparent support for Israel of the killer. In 'Anders Behring Breivik: a disturbing ideology', McIntyre condemns the 'pure racism' of the media for initially linking the killings to Islamist extremists. After describing how breaking coverage was 'quick to pin the blame to Al-Qa'ida, or in fact, any Muslims', he sets out the charge that the media in fact wanted the murders to fit a 'desired narrative': 'Gradually, the Sky News hawks, as political hip-hop artist Lowkey summarised on his Twitter feed, began to "swallow their propaganda". Pure racism and Islamophobia, exposed for what they were. This terrorist attack did not fit the desired narrative.'
