Unlike the storied tunnels of Iraq's psycho-despot, Saddam Hussein, which turned out to be fictitious, Libya's lunatic leader has reportedly built a vast, underground network of passageways and bunkers that could stretch for hundreds of miles beneath the desert. Click here for the story.
Reports of the dictator's defeat clearly exaggerated, along with the military capabilities of rebel forces whose own defeat was prevented and whose impending victory was made possible by US/NATO bombing and, most probably, by covert special forces operations, too, contrary to US/NATO denials. French commandos and private contractors among the foreign boots on the ground. NATO airstrikes now ongoing as Obama and the Europeans attempt to annihilate the regime in order to install a so-called Islamic democracy.

A sharia-light Islamocracy would be alright in the eyes of this administration.
In the meantime, Libya's post-civil war future is likely to be ... more civil war. Numerous factions are jockeying for power. These include Arabs and Berbers, eastern and western Libyans--the rebel leadership is based in the East--and the above-referenced Islamists, including phony moderates and unabashed Al Qaeda affiliates. Add the complicating factor of tribes and clans and the probability of a Libya torn by continued sectarian and political strife are quite high.

More recently, the same newspaper and other liberal media outlets reported murderous attacks by Muslims on Egyptian Coptic Christians as "clashes," distorting the fact that the violence committed by the unprotected Copts consisted of justifiable acts of self-defense by people targeted for annihilation. A personal note. More than two decades before the Crown Heights riots, this reporter witnessed a similar example of mis/disinformation on the part of the Times. A militant group calling itself the Black and Puerto Rican Students Committee (BPRSC)--led by non- and part-time students who had basically become professional revolutionaries--occupied and shut down the City College of New York, a great institution of higher learning known, historically, as the Harvard of the Working Class, in order to force the adoption of the disastrous open admissions policy that subsequently nearly destroyed the school.
At one point during the protracted protest, a band of black non-students from the neighboring western Harlem neighborhood, armed with pipes, clubs, and chains, physically assaulted a peaceful group of white and Asian counter-protestors. Several counter-protestors were bloodied and injured in the attack, which coincided with the firebombing and destruction of a new music department auditorium at the College (a crime that remains unsolved to this day).
The next morning, the Times reported the clearly unprovoked attack on innocent, unarmed students as an "altercation" between black and white students.
POSTSCRIPT: The Times' coverage of the long ordeal at CCNY also omitted reporting of: death threats to teachers who dared to defy the occupation by holding classes; the staging of a mass voice vote for open admissions in the presence of leather jacketed and armed thugs who glared ominously at frightened faculty members and students and shouted, "We know your face!" before the vote; and speeches by BPRSC leaders and their leftwing white supporters that included threats of violence and vicious anti-Semitic rants. "When the sun goes down, Jew bitches better get out of town," is one line that this reporter--a second-generation native New Yorker--will never forget.
Final word: when this reporter was a teenager on Manhattan's notoriously liberal Upper West Side, murders, muggings, and rapes were commonplace. Innocent merchants--candy store owners and grocers, among other robbery victims--were gunned down in cold blood, even if they offered no resistance to the criminals. Elderly residents, including some who had survived the Holocaust, were routinely assaulted and robbed. An incident that comes to mind: the murder of a neighbor who had lived through the Nazi death camps. He was beaten to death and robbed after entering the lobby of an apartment building one evening on his way to visit another Holocaust survivor. Naturally, the knee-jerk liberal response to these atrocities was to talk and write about "root causes" and, whenever possible, to also blame the victim. What was he/she doing out late at night? What was he/she thinking, walking in the park? Why was he/she walking on that side of Broadway in the first place?And so on and so forth ... from the search for root causes of crime on the West Side to the search for root causes of terrorism in the Middle East ... nothing much has changed.
The intervention had nothing at all to do with protecting civilians from slaughter; rather, the objective was to install a presumably pliant, oxymoronic "Islamic democracy," or Islamocracy, in line with the Obama/European theory that it is possible to ride the Islamist tiger without being devoured by it.
Almost 10 years after 9/11, the hoary notion that rightwing political Islam can be effectively exploited, that there are meaningful differences from a U.S. national interest perspective between, say, the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda, Hamas and the Taliban, America-hating Iranian Islamists and America-hating Pakistani and Saudi Islamists, Shiite fanatics and Sunni fanatics, and so on and so forth--this horribly dangerous idea that unleashed the monster that massacred some 3,000 Americans on American soil is, incredibly, alive and well in Washington, DC. In fact, using, influencing--and trying to actually lead--rightwing political Islam and overlapping organized and state Islam is, ironically, the overriding obsession of the most leftwing-ever President in U.S. history.
The U.S. State Department has correctly continued to list Communist Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, as reported here.
More attention should be focused on the Castro regime in this regard--specifically, its ties to Iran and Hezbollah and investments in biological warfare. Foreign Confidential™ analysts say Cuba and Venezuela are collaborating with Iran and its Islamist Lebanese terrorist proxy to establish bases and methods for attacking the United States in the event of an all-out war between the U.S. and Iran over its nuclear weapons program. Cuba also sees mega-terrorism as an insurance policy of sorts against any possible future U.S. intervention on the island.
In short, there is an Axis of Evil, and the Castro brothers are among its card-carrying members.
