Hurricane Irene Ravages America's Eastern Seaboard, Revealing Shocking Vulnerability of Nation's Infrastructure Less than a Week After Earthquake

As of this writing, a powerful hurricane--about the size of Europe--is making its way up the East Coast of the United States, bringing floods, thunderstorms, torrential rainfalls, wind damage--including downed trees and power lines--and, astonishingly, tornado warnings.

More than a million-and-a-half people are already without power. Several million people could be without electricity--for days--according to experts.

New York City is shut down, its legendary, massive mass transit system closed. Airpots and train terminals are shut. Taxis are off the streets. Times Square is empty.

About 370,000 New Yorkers have been ordered to evacuate their homes. Lower Manhattan sections could be flooded. The upper floors of high-rise apartment buildings across the city are especially vulnerable. Bridges and tunnels are vulnerable, too.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is closed. New York City is likely to close its bridges.

Counties, cities, and towns are declaring curfews.

The loss of power--and transportation--could be the big story, following the cellular phone disruption caused by the unusual 5.8 earthquake in central Virginia, which was felt as far north as Buffalo, NY and Burlington, Vermont, because of the rocky nature of the East Coast subsurface, which serves as a medium for transmitting a quake's energy over great distances.

Natural disasters can't be prevented. But the vulnerability of the infrastructure--almost 10 years after 9/11--is frightening.

How Hamas and Israel Approached All-Out War

Will the conflict be fought on the terms of Israel's enemies, including nuclear-arming Iran and its missile-mad proxies? That is the key question facing Israeli defense planners.
