The men he could not save were sitting ducks, annihilated by Islamist scum because of insane rules of engagement, because the American officers who did not order air support were prevented from doing so out of fear of being ... prosecuted ... for possibly striking the Afghan village that was harboring the clerical fascist Taliban.

Friedman asserts that U.S. President Barack Obama is a "friend" of Israel. Really? With friends like Obama....
Seriously, what Friedman and his fellow Democrats forget, is that Israel's true friends and supporters have access to televisions and radios, Internet-copnnected computers, smart phones and other mobile devices, newspapers and magazines. In other words, they can read, see, hear what Obama and his henchpersons are doing ... to promote political/organized Islam and to pressure and squeeze Israel.
Concerning an international obsession that is out of whack with the overall assault on the nation state....
Palestinian Arab nationalism, temporarily, at least, is the only acceptable nationalism in the eyes of the Obama administration and the American and European political elites--with the possible exception of Turkish nationalism.
What the two acceptable nationalisms have in common, of course, is Islamism, a global movement that the globalizing elites are cynically and stupidly (because it will blow back in their faces) trying to manipulate and exploit for political and economic reasons. Non-Arab Turkey is already ruled by an Islamist regime, albeit one that is hailed by Obama and Company as a "moderate" model. The planned new, irredentist Arab mini-state, which the foreign elites aim to sandwich in between a shrunken Israel and a shaky Kingdom of Jordan--nation states comprising the western and eastern banks of the Jordan River, respectively, in a land that was historically known as Palestine--is certain to be dominated by Islamists.
As shown by the phenomenal, post-Cold War rise of NATO, the bipartisan destruction of the once mighty American economy, the crushing and pauperizing of the American middle/working classes, and related developments, the nation state system is being attacked by powerful forces seeking to replace it with a kind of one-world corporate government. Hence, the hollowing out of the American economy--the outsourcing of its manufacturing sector by Republicans and Democrats alike--in the name of "global competitiveness."
The apparent, long-term objective is the establishment of a supreme, global holding company--a super-conglomerate controlling worldwide commerce, industries, energy--with the power to invade countries, create and confiscate wealth, jail and execute people across the planet, arm and disarm parts of the population, starve and enslave, etc.
There is no place in such a system for a truly sovereign America, truly sovereign European states, a Jewish State of any sort, regardless of size or shape. (Christianity and Judaism are also slated for extinction; but Islam is seen by the architects of the new global despotism as an inherently political, somehow pliable religion of much of the Third World.)
But don't be surprised if, here and there, to facilitate their diabolical plots and plans, mad schemes and dreams, the anti-nation state globalizers support the emergence of ... new nation states ... for the express purpose of dismembering old ones. Belgium and Italy could be pushed to fail and break apart in order to drive home certain, new world order economic lessons, for example. But the real push for country crack-ups will be in China and Russia, using Islamist separatist movements in both countries and Tibetan separatism in China.

When it came to power and the whole country was in its grip, why didn't the most leftwing administration in American history propose the creation of a national oil company, one that could have produced millions of well paying, permanent jobs and at last made the dream of energy independence a reality by focusing on development of huge, neglected, domestic, onshore and offshore oil and gas resources (and maybe coal liquefaction, also) and instead opt for promoting inefficient, non-existent, non-job-creating "green alternatives" that have resulted inscandal and waste and a deeper dependency on overseas oil?
The answers to the above questions are not to be found in the traditional Left-Right divide. There is more to the choking-off of real American energy, Obama's odious outreach to organized/political Islam, and Bush's failure to swiftly and decisively defeat radical Islam--and his unnecessary invasion of Iraq--than meets the eye.
POSTSCRIPT: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, John Hunstsman, and other advocates of globalization are fond of telling Americans that "the economy has changed," as if by nature or an unavoidable historical process. In fact, the economy was changed--by Big Government and Big Business--in ways that have benefitted relative handfuls of Americans at the expense of the rest of the citizenry. Similarly, the global jihad didn't just happen; it was made to happen, unleashed by Washington, fueled and funded with American taxpayer money with the support of nuclear-armed Pakistan (a country with one organizing principle, Islam) and Saudi Arabia (an oil-rich tyranny with no civil or human rights). The Carter administration secretly assisted both the Islamist takeover of Iran and the Islamist revolt in Afghanistan--the latter intervention in order to lure the Soviets into invading the backward Muslim land and so hand Moscow its own, horribly costly, Vietnam-like quagmire--and the Reagan administration escalated this Cold War-era adventure in Great Gamesmanship into the largest-ever U.S. covert operation.

OF TURKISH PUPPET STATE PLOT
Foreign Confidential™ can report that the Gulf states are rife with rumors of a Turkish invasion of northern Syria. Turkey is believed to be bent on establishing a Kurdish puppet state in North Syria in order to put an end to "the Kurdish problem."
Iran is also believed to be interested in invading its secular ally in order to set up an Alawite puppet state in the center of the country.
With Syria's deadly crackdown on dissent entering its seventh month, the country's dismemberment seems increasingly likely.
On Friday, Turkey's neo-Ottoman Prime Minister stepped up his criticism of Syria's embattled dictator, adding to speculation that Turkey is preparing a dramatic move.
