Ignore the dumb or deliberately deceiving comparison in the article's lead sentence to the fictional Soprano crime family. The mafia analogy is meant to emphasize the Machiavellian angle while downplaying the ideological dimension--the role that rightwing political Islam, or Islamism, plays in the story and in U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, Central Asia and across the Arab world (e.g. Libya). The article speaks volumes about the cynical, stupid policy of arming and funding the worst scum on earth (apart from the North Korean regime) in order to manipulate and exploit Islamism, a form of clerical fascism, commonly called radical Islam, which threatens all of civilized humanity.
Republicans and Democrats alike supported the shameful U.S. intervention in Afghanistan on the side of Afghan Islamists and drug-dealing warlords. In fact, the U.S. intervention, which was aimed at rolling back and hastening the collapse of the Soviet Union, began under President Jimmy Carter. The Afghan adventure was the brainchild of National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. Reagan expanded the intervention into the largest-ever covert U.S. operation.
Which unleashed the global jihad that blew back in America's face on 9/11.
Ten years later, the United States, as the above-referenced article makes clear, is still trying to ride the Islamist tiger without being eaten by it.
