The Arab Spring
Libya: Undoubtedly an ogre, Qadaffi has finally lost it. We look at his career
- destroyer of three airliners - one US and two French, bombed out of the sky with their passengers, gaoler for years of the Bulgarian contract nurses blamed for an AIDS epidemic! A global patron of terrorism and this man nearly acquired a nuclear weapon!
Syria: This is the only secular Arab government left. Iraq was the other one and Syria's people saw what happened there when authority collapsed, and the Sunni and Shi’ite killers could go after each other.
This is why the comfortable Syrian middle-class are not involved. The two biggest cities, Damascus and Aleppo have not engaged in the uprising. There are obviously many legitimate grievances and the heavy hand of the government has worsened the situation but there is a realistic fear that youth and the urge for democracy, are being exploited by the Moslem Brotherhood, the ancient enemy of secularism, the long-ruling Alawites and the several other minorities.
Morocco: The kingdom is staying ahead of the reform movement who are anyway not calling for regime change. The king is demonstrating that he is a natural reformer – an intelligent reaction to the inevitable forces of change. We explain what is now agreed, after a referendum.
Egypt: Courtroom scenes of a sick old man in a cage, have not won friends for Egypt's new rulers, whoever they may be, a riddle that we explore. We consider the make up of a prospective new government.
Saudi Arabia: No mass demonstrations here. The kingdom have reacted intelligently to the potential threat to their future.

Afghanistan – the peace talks, but who is talking to whom?
Pakistan – US relations are at a low ebb. Both sides feel they have been betrayed and perhaps they are both 'guilty.' Bring back Musharraf?
Iraq: Is the end really in sight?
Iran is getting interesting!
Turkey: 'moving up' in international affairs.
Russia North: their development plan for the Artic.
Russia South: 'Russian Federation Caucasus', or 'Caucasus Emirate'?
The Former Soviet Union
Azerbaijan: Nagorno Karabakh rears its head again.
Kyrgyzstan: Fragile stability threatened. Kyrgyz-v-Uzbeks.
Turkmenistan: Nabucco getting nowhere.
Kazakhstan: Nazarbayev’s health scare and the succession.
Georgia: 3rd anniversary of five-day war with Russia.
The Former Yugoslav Republic
Serbia: more nasty problems with Kosovo.
Bosnia: no government, yet it’s 10 months since election.
East Asia
North Korea: the Dear Leader takes a train journey – again! This time to Siberia, for a swim in Lake Baikal. We look at the big issues.
Vietnam: Spiky as ever, Vietnam is ready to repel boarders in the South China Sea, as well as crushing dissent at home.
Taiwan: Breath of fresh air as DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen announces her party’s policy towards China for January elections. The KMT have got a fight on their hands.
