Foreign Secretary William Hague has said there is "no immediate prospect" of repatriating powers from the European Union.
He said he was in favour of such a move but it was some way off, because no countries were proposing widescale treaty change.

Change EU treaty to stabilise bloc, says Trichet
PARIS, Oct 16 (Reuters) - European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said the European Union's treaty should be changed to prevent one member state from destabilising the rest of the bloc, and urged stronger governance of the euro zone.
"In my view it is necessary to change the treaty to prevent one member state from straying and creating problems for all the others," Trichet said in interview broadcast on French radio Europe 1 and iTele television on Sunday.
Asked whether this would mean getting rid of vetoes for member states, he said: "To do this, one even needs to be able to impose decisions."
But he added that he expected existing governance rules would be applied much more rigorously in the future, even without a change in the treaty.

ECB has done all it can for EU: Trichet
“The ECB has done all it could to be up to its responsibilities in exceptional circumstances,” Mr. Trichet told the Financial Times in an interview on Thursday. “The ultimate backstop is, of course, the governments. To do anything that would let governments off their responsibilities would be a recipe for failure.”
