1. Noam Chomsky: Riots, Financial Disaster and UK Media

Noam Chomsky
As we arrive into the autumn of a socially, politically and economically tumultuous year, who better to take the temperature of where we are than Father of Modern Linguistics, geopolitical guru and intellectual/philosophical titan Professor Noam Chomsky? During a brief three day visit to Europe and overlooking his hard wired reluctance to engage fully with the mainstream media, Professor Chomsky agreed to an exclusive and pretty comprehensive interview for Huffington Post (UK) encompassing all topical matters, which you can watch. Viewers will see that he does not pull his punches. The "disease" David Cameron referred to in response to the summer of riots is acknowledged; according to Chomsky, "Cameron is committed to making that disease much worse" by merely making those who offended "poorer and more destitute". The present lack of public faith in the UK national media is a "serious problem for your society" that calls into question the overall quality of our democracy, and the "hopelessly dysfunctional" models of western governance around our economies and healthcare provision are balanced with positive suggestions of how to build our way out of financial crisis.

Occupy London Stock Exchange takes it to the City this Saturday

#OccupyLSX Press Release: Londoners set to launch occupation in the heart of the city’s financial centre on Saturday 15th October, as part of a global movement for real democracy. As protests on Wall Street capture the imagination of the world, with people taking to the streets to hold the global financial system to task, a diverse group of Londoners is coming together to launch a peaceful occupation near the London Stock Exchange (LSX) at Paternoster Square. Laura Taylor, a supporter of OccupyLSX, asked:“Why are we paying for a crisis the banks caused? More than a million people have lost their jobs and tens of thousands of homes have been repossessed, while small businesses are struggling to survive. Yet bankers continue to make billions in profit and pay themselves enormous bonuses, even after we bailed them out with £850bn.” OccupyLSX supporter Kai Wargalla explains: “This is a people- powered movement protesting against the increasing social and economic injustice in the UK. We want to stand with the 99% – the overwhelming majority who value people over profit. We want to make our voices heard against greed, corruption and for a democratic, just society." The occupation in London comes at the same time that hundreds of cities around the world are protesting under the banner of “United For Global Change” calling for true democracy. This is a movement that transcends political affiliation. It aims to open a dialogue on reforming finance and government so that each better serve and protect the interests and wellbeing of the 99%.

Will Occupy Wall Street's Spark Reshape Our Politics?

When the organizers of Occupy Wall Street first gathered to discuss their plan of action, the strategy that resonated most came from those who had occupied squares in Madrid and Athens, Tunis and Cairo. Six weeks later, on Sept. 17, the occupation in downtown New York began, with scant attention, minimal and often derisive media coverage, and little expectation that it would light a spark where others had not. Now, in its fourth week, Occupy Wall Street has the quality of an exploding star: It is gathering energy in enormous and potent quantities, and propelling it outward to all corners of the country. The protesters in the nascent movement have been criticized for being too decentralized and lacking a clear list of demands. But they are bearing witness to the corruption of our politics; if they made demands to those in power, it would suggest those in power could do something about it. This contradicts what is, perhaps, their most compelling point: that our institutions and politicians serve the top 1 percent, not the other 99. Occupy Wall Street is now in more than 800 cities and counting.

UK Financial Services Authority Investigates UNUM Insurance?

A little bird has informed Black Triangle that the Financial Services Authority’s Enforcement and Financial Crimes Division is giving careful consideration to allegations that have been levelled against Unum for insider trading. The allegations are founded on them mounting a massive marketing campaign in the UK for their income protection products (disability insurance) while being advisors to the DWP on welfare reform. We are monitoring the situation with interest and will keep you informed of any further developments.

Feral overclass Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly faces inquiries into legal aid profits

Jonathan Djanogly, the justice minister, is being investigated
over claims that he may profit from changes to legal aid costs.

Jonathan Djanogly, the justice minister, has admitted for the first time to MPs that inquiries had been launched by his own department and the Cabinet Office following an investigation by the Guardian that revealed he could personally profit from changes he was piloting in the Commons. The Guardian first disclosed that the minister had extensive interests in the insurance industry – which stood to gain by "hundreds of millions of pounds" from a series of changes to the legal aid, sentencing and punishment of offenders bill. The bill piloted by the minister proposes to slash the legal aid budget by £350m and shift part of the costs of bringing "no win, no fee" cases from losing defendants to winning claimants. The minister has come under pressure from Downing Street after the Guardian said he had failed to declare that his teenage children were minority shareholders in his brother-in-law's businesses – two firms which advertise accident compensation claims and are part of an industry that Djanogly regulates in government. Both firms have been strongly criticised by both the Solicitors' Regulatory Authority and the Solicitors' Disciplinary Tribunal. After he was contacted the minister sold his children's stake. The Guardian has also exposed the close links between industry and the minister's department – with officials telling insurance companies they were "pushing at an open door" over the changes.

GPS Inventor Joins EFF in Fight Against Warrantless GPS Tracking

Washington, D.C. - The principal inventor of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other leading technologists have joined the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in urging the U.S Supreme Court to block the government from using GPS tracking without first getting a warrant, arguing that the massive collection of sensitive location data should require court oversight. In an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court Monday in United States v. Jones, EFF, Mr. Easton, along with other technology experts, pointed out the many ways in which GPS tracking is fundamentally different from and more invasive than other surveillance technologies the court has allowed before, and how law enforcement use of GPS without a warrant violates Americans' reasonable expectations of privacy. "This is the first case where the Supreme Court will consider automatic, persistent, passive location tracking by law enforcement," said EFF Senior Staff Attorney Mar cia Hofmann. "The government can use location information over time to learn where you go to church, what sort of doctors you go to, what meetings and activities you participate in, and much more. Police should not have blanket permission to install GPS devices and collect detailed information about people's movements over time without court review."

Catholics Oppose New Law Allowing Kids' Vaccines Without Parental Permission

LOS ANGELES (CNA)—Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez joined the California Catholic Conference in criticizing a new law that allows 12-year-olds to receive vaccinations against sexual diseases without their parents’ permission. “Parents bear the first responsibility for their children’s physical and spiritual well-being. This new law, however, bypasses parental involvement, wisdom and guidance,”said Archbishop Gomez in his Oct. 10 response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s decision to sign the vaccination proposal into law. 73% of teenagers who sign up to receive the Gardasil vaccine never complete the series of three shots, which must be received over the course of three months at a cost of $120 each.
