Although an armed, Islamist-led insurgency has overtaken civilian protests in Syria, there are still secular opposition figures of importance and influence in the country, and the regime would be wise to negotiate with them, according to this analysis.
Foreign Confidential™ memo to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad: If you want to save your skin, and save Syria and the Middle East from a horrible bloodbath, you should think outside the box, and beat Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood at their own game … by publicly offering (a) to create a coalition government committed to maintaing a secular Syrian system, and (b) to turn Syria into a politically neutral (truly nonaligned) state. Signaling a sincere willingness to end Syria's ultimately suicidal alliance with nuclear arming, Islamist Iran and its Islamist Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah, would open a portal to peace. Assuming Syria's Sunni Islamizing trend isn't unstoppable, there is no legitimate reason why Syria shouldn't strive to live in peace with all its neighbors--including Israel--and seek to transform itself into a Middle Eastern Switzerland with its security guaranteed by the United Nations.
Of course, you will have to share power, Mr. President, and perhaps, even, leave office altogether. But better to retire comfortably in Damascus--or in Europe, for that matter--than to end up like Hitler in a bunker or Ghaddafi in a ditch.
Think it over. You may feel strong with your missiles and stockpiles of chemical warheads. But you really have no idea of the forces arrayed against you. Radical shifts in strategy and rhetoric may be the best way forward. Who know's? In today's anything-is-possible world, you may even win a Nobel Peace Prize for steering Syria away from civil war, nuclear armageddon … and Islamist hell.

Christmas is over; but, with the funeral for North Korean Dear Leader Kim Jong Il scheduled for this Wednesday, and the North threatening South Korea with "catastrophic consequences" for allegedly limiting condolences, this weekend could see a new North Korean provocation timed to mar New Year's Eve celebrations and the New Year's Day holiday.

The Obama White House, as reported here, has condemned "senseless violence"--"what initially appeared to be terrorist acts"--in Nigeria.
Actually, the violence--coordinated, Christmas Day bombings of innocent Christians by fanatic Muslims--is both both political and religious and in that sense not at all "senseless" as the massacres are meant to terrorize non-Muslims into accepting medieval Sharia as the law of the land.
Question: When will Barack Hussein Obama, who has made outreach to and support for organized/political Islam the foundation of an utterly failed foreign policy, use the most appropriate, strongest possible language to unequivocally condemn Islamic clerical fascism, barbaric, fundamentalist Islam, and barbaric Islamic law--in short, the scourge of civilized humanity?
Answer: Never.
Reason: Obama is pro-Islamist. Even Boko Haram, the bloodthirsty Muslim sect responsible for today's atrocities, is OK to engage (appease and align with) according to Obama. The only Sunni Islamist groups that are not OK to engage, as far as he and his henchpersons are concerned, are Al Qaeda and "irreconcilable Taliban" elements--at least, for the time being. At the rate things are going, if Obama is (God forbid) reelected, even they will eventually be considered acceptable engagement candidates.
The Nazi-like, nuclear-arming Shiite regime in Iran and its Shiite Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah, and Sunni Palestinian Islamist client, Hamas, were also regarded by Obama as OK to engage when he took power; but the atomic ayatollah, missile-mad mullahs, and their maniac-in-chief, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, rebuffed BHO. So the mullahocracy must now go.
So it goes on Christmas 2011, more than 10 years after the Afghanistan/Iran/Pakistan/Saudi-supported, Al Qaeda/Islamist slaughter of 3,000 Americans on American soil … the worst-ever attacks on the United States … to which Obama initially reacted, as recalled here, with a written appeal (a) to "understand" the root causes of the monstrous crimes ("poverty and ignorance") and (b) to defend Muslims and people of Middle Eastern descent against bigotry and non-existent persecution.
Next year year at this time, Americans--and people the world over--will know if Obama of "the Muslim World" will be moving out of the White House.
That he was elected in the first place now seems … incredible. A mysterious, possibly dual-national, and thus Constitutionally ineligible, Muslim-born-and-reared politician (he was born a Muslim according to Islamic law and he practiced and studied Islam as child in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, where his Indonesian Muslim stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, listed his adopted son's religion as Muslim and his citizenship as Indonesian on a never-disputed, elementary school registration certificate) with a shocking history of radical associations and friendships (e.g. Farrakhan and Ayers) and no administrative or executive experience of any kind, neither in politics nor in business.
Accent on mysterious. To this day, BHO's birthplace is questioned by many Americans (the long-awaited, long-form birth certificate that was finally released seems phony and no Hawaiian hospital claims him) and his academic records, from kindergarten through law school, remain inexplicably sealed, like some state secret.
His only foreign policy achievement--killing Bin Laden--is overshadowed by an odious outreach to what Obama insists on calling "the Muslim world," a supposed global entity that transcends all national, political, and ethnic boundaries.
In fact, killing Bin Laden and decimating Al Qaeda through drone attacks has given Obama political cover for promoting rightwing political and overlapping organized Islam overseas and at home. Under Obama, the United States is now squarely and openly on the side of Sunni political Islam--i.e. the Nazi/fascist-admiring Muslim Brotherhood, which spawned Al Qaeda, and Islamist-led Turkey--and, even if regime change in Shiite Islamist Iran is in the works, following the Obama-backed Islamist takeovers of Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt ahead of the coming, Obama-aided Islamist conquest of Syria, there is no reason to believe that Iran's Islamic Republic system will be dismantled if Obama has his way. The clerical fascist system will merely be reformed, replaced with a "moderate" Islamist version--yet another, oxymoronic Islamocracy. That is Obama's objective, for, like his fellow leftists--and the U.S. and European power elitists with whom they are ironically allied on the Islamist/Islamic issue--Obama clearly views Islam as the religion of the Third World masses, and political Islam as a fundamentally progressive and pliant creed, a useful tool, or sword, for organizing nations and entire regions in line with history's "moral arc."
Four more years of Obama of the Muslim World?
We'll know before next Christmas.
