Turks and Russians

FM Davutoglu recommends Russian brides

Important decisions aied at improving Turco-Russian relations were reached during FM Davutoglu's two day visit to Russia. Davutoglu said that there were plans to open three new trade offices in Russia and the volume of trade was expected to increase from its current value of $31.5bn to $100bn within five years.

FM Davutoglu replied to our questions on the flight home back from Moscow. He pointed out that tourism would increase rapidly thanks to removing visa requirements. As of last year, 3.5 million Russians visited Turkey making that country second after Germany in the statistics. But it is expected that the number of Russian tourists will rise to ten million within a few years. When talking to his Russian colleague Lavrov, Davutoglu quipped that the Russians had finally found their way into the warm waters of the Mediterranean without having to fight for it. Work is under way to increase the visa exemption period from 30 to 60 days.

Davutoglu also drew attention to Turco-Russian marriages: "it is important to have more marriages to improve bilateral relations. Russian brides are ideally suited for Turkish families. Russian and Turkish family values are very similar. Russian ladies are very loyal and respectful. One of my own consultants in the ministry is married to a Russian lady. My wife has many Russian patients. She confirms my observations that they are ideally suited to Turkish families."
