Vatican reproaches Turkey

February 28, 2012

It was revealed that the Vatican and the Catholic community in Turkey are upset because their representatives were not invited to the parliament to speak before a commission responsible for drafting a new constitution. By contrast, leaders of the Orthodox, Jewish and Armenian communities have all been invited and heard.

According to the Cumhuriyet [a left leaning daily], a reproachful letter was sent to the parliamentary group from the Vatican Embassy. The Papal Nuncio, Kenan Gürsoy, has indicated that the Catholic Church was "disappointed" and added his recommendation that "to prevent a misunderstanding by the church" a representative of the Catholic Church be included in the parliamentary group's work.
