As the violence in Syria continued to escalate and with armed resistance to Bashar Assad's forces on the rise, a dispute broke out between online jihadis and senior cleric Abu Basir Al-Tartousi, a Syrian expat based in London. The dispute began when Tartousi published a post on his Facebook page saying that there was no need for mujahideen to travel to Syria to aid the Syrian people in their fight against the Assad regime, as Syria did not lack its own "valiants." Tartousi did, however, call on the mujahideen to support the Syrian people by sending them the money, arms, and doctors they did lack. He called on those set on reaching Syria regardless to do so only in coordination with the Free Syrian Army (FSA), so as to prevent operational mistakes and to avoid falling "easy prey in the enemy's hands." He emphasized that the fighting in Syria was characterized by urban warfare, which he said was more dangerous than warfare on the typical front, and that it was the Syrians who best knew the streets and alleyways of their own cities. According to the pro-Assad Syrian website "Al-Haqiqa (The Truth)," Syria's repeated claims that Free Syrian Army (FSA) members are nothing but Al-Qaeda and global jihad activists who arrived in Syria from various Arab countries was recently bolstered by jihad websites close to Al-Qaeda, which reported on the deaths of mujahideen from various Arab countries during clashes with Syrian security forces. One such website posted the pictures of four jihadis who were supposedly killed in Syria: Abu Al-Baraa Al-Sulti, of Jordan; Abu Hudheifa, AKA Fuad Khaled Al-Kuwaiti, of Kuwait; Abu Osama Al-Muhajir; and Abu Hamza Al-Shami. The website reported that according to estimates by security sources, roughly 1,000 armed jihadis had infiltrated Syria. On February 10, 2012, the Arab media picked up the story, publishing the names and photos of the four jihadis supposedly killed in the fighting in Syria. The source of this info, according to Alarabiya.com, is the Syrian Al-Dunya channel, which supports the Assad regime.
