(ANSA) - Rome, March 19 - Income records released Monday showed that former premier Silvio Berlusconi was the richest man in parliament with over 48 million euros earned in 2011, eight million more than the previous year.
Italian Premier Mario Monti made 1.5 million euros in 2011, making him the wealthiest Senator for life, a position he accepted in the run-up to taking the helm of a government of technocrats after Berlusconi resigned in November in the heat of the euro crisis.
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, former Italian president and ex-governor of the Bank of Italy, was the second-highest-earning Senator for life with 691,832 euros. Senate Speaker Renato Schifani earned 223,939 euros, slightly more than House Speaker Gianfranco Fini who made 201,115 euros in 2011.
