Budget week didn't exactly go to plan for Osborne and the Treasury, with half measures and hidden treasures, he lost the news narrative almost immediately. Not least because all the goodies had been briefed out already. To make matters worse the government then tried to distract from the rough ride in the press with a rushed policy announcement about ill thought out and regressive alcohol minimum pricing. It was never going to be a good week for anyone when Gordon turned up in town, but that didn't mean George had to copy all his tricks. At least Ed got some good coverage and the reaction separated the men from the boys.
Elsewhere Ed's internal strife is going from bad to worse, we had more leaked lettersand briefings. Kens's troubles have not been far away either. Every time he opens his mouth he seems to get into more trouble. He's promised he will pay his tax by May, which is nice, but only if he wins. Even one of his most vocal supporters was forced to concede that he should publish his tax returns. After another week of gaffes with Jewish community, resulting in a stinging letter leaked to the Jewish Chronicle, it can came as little surprise that Boris has opened up an eight point lead in the polls.
