Warning that our nation's fiscal health has deteriorated appreciably since the onset of the financial crisis and the recession, Bernanke called upon lawmakers to confront the long term fiscal challenges sooner rather than later. If lawmakers don't confront them, they'll find themselves confronted by them.'

The volcanoes of Iceland could soon be pumping low-carbon electricity into the UK under government-backed plans for thousands of miles of high-voltage cables across the ocean floor.
The energy minister, Charles Hendry, is to visit Iceland in May to discuss connecting the UK to its abundant geothermal energy. “We are in active discussions with the Icelandic government and they are very keen,” Hendry told the Guardian. To reach Iceland, which sits over a mid-ocean split in the earth’s crust, the cable would have to be 1,000 to 1,500km long and by far the longest in the world.'

Italian Labor Unions Protest Pension Overhaul

'Italy’s main labor unions have staged rallies in the capital Rome to protest Prime Minster Mario Monti's pension reforms that is expected to trap many workers in a legal limbo without retirement pay.
The plan will see the retirement age raised and that younger workers will collect smaller pensions than their parents. Monti’s pension plan is part of a multi-billion dollar austerity package passed in January to save the country from bankruptcy, which is currently a large threat looming over the eurozone.'

Italian Workers Commit Suicide Due to Financial Hardships

'At least 18 Italian citizens have committed suicide due to economic hardships and high unemployment rate so far this year.

On Friday, a group representing Italian taxpayers’ rights (Federcontribuenti) requested an investigation into the financially motivated suicides that has happened since the beginning of the year to "find out if those who are supposed to be stopping this social slaughter aren't doing their jobs," ANSA reported.

The organization also suggested that the number of suicides much be even higher as some cases are not reported.'
