In Tenth Installment Of Message To People Of Egypt, Al-Qaeda Leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri Calls On Egyptians To Enact Shari'a, Establish Caliphate, Unite Against 'American Secular Plot'

Daily62312004.jpg

On June 18, 2012, Al-Qaeda's media company Al-Sahab released the tenth installment of a series of recordings by Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri titled "Message of Hope and Glad Tidings to Our People in Egypt." This installment deals with "Israel's persistent attempts to Judaize Jerusalem." Al-Zawahiri first condemns the demolishing of Osama bin Laden's home in Pakistan, saying that the disposal of his body in the ocean and the demolishing of his home attest to the U.S.'s deep-seated fear of him, whether alive or dead. Turning to the topic of Egypt, Zawahiri says that, because of its peace agreement with Israel, Egypt has done nothing in the face of growing "crimes committed by the Jews in Palestine." He calls on Muslims in Egypt to confront the "crime" of Judaizing Jerusalem by combining the efforts of all Muslim organizations to enact the shari'aand make it Egypt's source of legislation, and to establish an Islamic caliphate. According to Al-Zawahiri, the West is fighting the principles of Islam because they threaten its interests in Muslim lands. Therefore, the West encourages Muslims to establish secular national states, and discourages them from enacting the shari'a and establishing a caliphate.

In His Second Message In 10 Days, Abu Yahya Al-Libi Criticizes U.S. Soldiers' Declining War Ethics

Daily62312024.jpg

On June 22, 2012, Al-Qaeda's media wing, Al-Sahab, released a new video message by Abu Yahya Al-Libi in which he criticizes the U.S. soldiers' deteriorating war ethics and their crimes against Islam and the Muslims. This is Al-Libi's second appearance in the past 10 days. Like his first message, of June 12, the video neither confirms nor denies Al-Libi's death, following an official U.S. declaration that he had been killed in a June 4 drone attack. In the message, almost 17 minutes in duration, Al-Libi discusses several specific instances of crimes perpetrated by U.S. and Western soldiers against Islam and Muslims. In particular, he mentions the February 2012 burning of Korans by NATO troops in Afghanistan and the March 2012 incident in which U.S. soldiers killed 16 Afghan civilians in Kandahar. It is worth noting that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri addressed the topic of Koran burning in a separate message posted online on March 9, 2012.

In New Audio Message, Senior AQAP Cleric Attempts To Sway Yemeni Soldiers From Supporting Anti-AQAP Efforts In Yemen

Daily62312010.jpg

On June 13, 2012, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) released an audio message by Sheikh Abu Al-Zubair, aka 'Adel bin 'Abdallah Al-'Abbab, addressed to Yemen's soldiers. Abu Al-Zubair is a top authority within AQAP on Islamic law. AQAP, it should be noted, has in the past addressed the issue of how properly to deal with the Yemeni military on multiple occasions. However, this latest message is the second in the past year dedicated entirely to the issue. Last year, AQAP's mufti, Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Rubaish, legitimized the targeting of Yemeni soldiers by the mujahideen. He also argued against the notion that these soldiers were merely "doing their job" and trying to make a living.

Daily62312012.jpg

After it lost control of the cities of Zinjibar (capital of the Abyan Governorate) and Ja'ar, which had been recaptured by the Yemeni army on June 12, 2012, the AQAP-affiliated organization Ansar Al-Shari'a (AS) issued a communiqué to the citizens of Ja'ar. In it, the organization claimed that it had not withdrawn out of weakness "but in order to confound the enemy" – namely "the Americans, French, British, and other Crusaders" and the "apostate" Yemeni government – and threatened to take the war to Western countries and to the palaces of the Yemeni regime. The communiqué was posted June 13, 2012 on the jihadi message board Shumoukh Al-Islam.

Salem Al-Quton

In a June 21, 2012 statement, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) took responsibility for the killing of Maj. Gen. Salem Ali Al-Quton, the commander of Yemen's army in the south. Al-Quton's convoy was targeted by a suicide bomber on June 18 in the city of Aden. Newly Revealed Emir Of 'Abdallah 'Azzam Brigades Expresses Opposition To Bombings In Syria's Cities

Daily62312015.jpg
Majid bin Muhammad Al-Majid

On June 20, 2012, the Al-Qaeda media company Al-Fajr released a new audio message by the 'Abdallah 'Azzam Brigades (AAB), an Al-Qaeda affiliate in the Syria-Lebanon region that was recently designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. In the message, the group reveals for the first time that its emir is Majid bin Muhammad Al-Majid, a Saudi national who is on the Saudi Interior Ministry's list of the 85 most wanted terrorists. It is important to note two things about this message: First, it was posted on the Al-Fida' jihadi forum, which is run by Al-Fajr, but was not posted on the Shumoukh Al-Islam jihadi forum, which has posted previous AAB communiqués. Second, in it, Al-Majid expresses his opposition to the bombings in Syrian cities. This stance is interesting since it is at odds with the operations by the other jihadi group, Jabhat Al-Nusra, which has taken responsibility for a series of highly visible and highly publicized bombings in major Syrian cities, and which has demonstrated rather unusual advances in its military and propaganda-related capabilities since it first emerged on the Syrian jihadi scene in January 2012. By the same token, it is also interesting that Jabhat Al-Nusra's communiqués have been posted only on the Shumoukh Al-Islam forum, not on Al-Fida'.

Senior Egyptian Salafi-Jihadi Sheikh to MB, Salafis: The Solution Is Not Political Participation But Revolution And Fighting. Join Us In Removing Mubarak Regime, Establishing Islamic Rule

Daily62312017.jpg

The jihadi forum Al-Fida has posted a document by Ahmad Al-'Ashoush, a senior Salafi-jihadi sheikh in Egypt, which was originally posted on an unofficial blog of the Egyptian mujahideen on June 19, 2012. In the document, 'Ashoush slams the Egyptian MB and the Salafis for turning their backs on Islam by participating in the presidential elections, granting legitimacy to the state's judiciary institutions, and "pandering to the Christians" by making them members and even senior officials in their "so-called Islamic parties." He states that this behavior caused half of the Egyptians to vote for Shafiq, thus delivering the country back into the arms of the Mubarak regime.
