This 1950’s best seller by Herman Wouk, focused on a US Navy captain who had succumbed to the stresses of command, in WW-2. In stormy conditions, and with the safety of the USS Caine and its crew under threat, his sub-ordinate officers relieve him of his command.

There is an alarmingly similar situation developing in Westminster, as our PM’s minor acts of : detachment from reality, become more frequent, and more outrageous.

Leaving the nipper in the rub a dub dub, is no big deal, as long as they get collected at some point, but it is a worrying indicator.

Following this gaff, and not content to lie low for a while, he promptly makes another serious move towards being sectioned under the Mental Health Act, by declaring to the press,

: THE PEOPLE DON’T WANT A REFERENDUM ON EUROPE !

the day after the DAILY EXPRESS published figures to show that

80 % actually do.

Remember, this is the guy who gave us a : cast iron guarantee of a referendum, before taking office in May 2010

The Express’s figures, also reflect what his own backbenchers have been screaming at for the last six months, and explain why councillors up and down the country are switching to UKIP.

There is however a problem, - Captain Cameron’s second, third and fourth in command, are not of the calibre of those on the USS Caine,

in fact come to think of it, they’re of no calibre at all.

The Head of State (resting between jubilee’s ) could of course remove him from office ( shades of the Gough Whitlam incident ) failing that, the vessel is going to founder.
