Will Israel's concern become reality? A defecting Syrian general has said
that the Syrian regime considered transferring chemical weapons to Hezbollah
for the organization's use against Israel. Major General Adnan Sillu told
the The Times that "the regime has nothing to lose. If a war were to erupt
between Hezbollah and Israel, it would be a good thing for Syria."
Sillu, who was responsible for the Syrian stockpiles of chemical weapons,
added that the Assad regime is considering using its chemical weapons
against civilians and opposition forces in the country, in the event that
the regime will be on the verge of collapse. "I witnessed discussions held
at topmost echelons, in which the issue of using the chemical weapons
against the rebels was discussed," he said. Sillu also confirmed the report
published last week by the German magazine Der Spiegel that the Syrian
military conducted tests of chemical missile systems in late August.
Eyewitnesses told Der Spiegel that the tests were conducted near the center
for chemical weaponry research in Safira, east of Aleppo, Syria's largest
city. It was additionally reported that five or six missiles were launched
from aircraft and tanks during the tests. "We held serious discussions on
the use of chemical weapons, including how it would be used and in which
areas," Sillu said. He added that "It was discussed as a last resort, in the
event that the regime would lose control over important areas such as
Aleppo."
Sillu also confirmed that representatives of Iran's Revolutionary Guards
attended the tests, and that Iran is involved in everything being done in
the country. "They always came to review and consult. They constantly sent
their scientists to us and sent our scientists over there. They were also
involved in the political issue that dealt with how to use the chemical
weapons.
