Barbara Berlusconi – “Dad, You Left Too Much Undone”
Barbara Berlusconi – “Dad, You Left Too Much Undone”
Silvio Berlusconi and Veronica Lario’s eldest daughter talks about herself, her father’s return to politics, AC Milan and the failings of younger politicians
“My father left too much unfinished, from presidentialism to public debt. That’s why he’s thinking about standing again. And only the electorate can judge him”. Barbara Berlusconi ranges far and wide in an exclusive interview with Sette magazine. Starting from the possible return to politics of her father, Ms Berlusconi goes on to comment on Mario Monti (“a technocrat who had been gearing up to be a politician for some time”) and the government’s spending review (“too timid”). Referring to the previous Berlusconi-led government, Ms Berlusconi notes that “it undoubtedly had the merit of inventing bipolarism and injecting new energy into the convoluted language of Italian politics but it failed to achieve other objectives, such as reducing public debt or carrying through institutional reform”.
LET DOWN BY ALFANO AND RENZI – Ms Berlusconi has words for “young” politicians: “I was expecting Angelino Alfano to have a bit more courage and modernity. More ideas and not so many party meetings”. Matteo Renzi “has been a letdown. He’s committing an error of strategy. He should be aiming to lead the nation, not the Democratic Party”. On gay marriage and civil unions, Ms Berlusconi is “in agreement but against adoption for homosexuals. There are choices that I don’t think are natural”.
PARENTS, MARINA AND PATO – Moving on to AC Milan, Ms Berlusconi says of the sale of Ibrahimovic and Thiago Motta: “My father and Adriano Galliani had decided to keep Thiago. Then Paris Saint Germain came along with an offer they couldn’t refuse for both.” There was time in the interview for reflection on her parents’ separation: “They started seeing each other again mainly to be with the grandchildren. They are really close to them”. Barbara also says that her sometimes frosty relations with her sister Marina are now on an even keel: “We get on well. And we talk a lot. Then as in all families, you often have different ideas because of the age difference”. Finally, Ms Berlusconi said of her relationship with AC Milan striker Alejandro Pato, which the gossip press has hinted is in trouble: “I’ve read a lot of colourful reconstructions but it’s my private life”.
