 'Sledgehammer' suspects sentenced in Turkey

Friday, 21 September, 2012 16:37

The 108th session of the trial of 365 coup d'etat suspects saw some very high ranking soldiers sentenced today.

Former commanders of Turkey's Navy and Air Force and a former commander of the 1st Army Corps were sentenced to life for "attempting to oust by force the executive of the Republic of Turkey and prevent it from performing its duties."

The three life sentences were then reduced to twenty years. Eleven other generals and admirals got eighteen years each and three got sixteen years each.

Thirty four suspects were acquitted while 250 others will remain in custody until their trials are over. The court has ordered the arrest of some suspects who were tried without custody.

A colonel suffered a heart attack in his cell and is being treated in hospital. Relations and supporters shouted slogans and sang politically charged songs in the courtroom.
