Northern League formalises plans for northern 'macroregion'
'75% of tax returns would stay within federation'

The project - presented initially by party secretary Roberto Maroni a few weeks ago - involves the creation of a federation of two or more regions with an independent tax system. Under the proposal 75% of tax revenue would remain within the federation.
The constitutional laws establishing it would also be subject to a referendum ''in order to legitimise the clear will of the people concerning this important political and institutional project''. Founded in the early 1990s as a grouping of regional parties in the centre and north, the Northern League has variously advocated the secession of the North, federalism, fiscal federalism and greater autonomy especially for the northern regions where it has its main support base.
