Top taxman set to retire as head of HMRC after catalogue of disasters
'Britain's top taxman is set to retire after a catalogue of disasters while he was head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
HMRC confirmed last night its under-fire Permanent Secretary of Tax David Hartnett is to retire next summer. Mr Hartnett’s reign has been dogged by gaffes as well as controversy over his department’s dealings with big companies.
He raised eyebrows by signing off a deal which let Goldman Sachs off a £10million tax bill. MPs on the powerful Public Administration Committee accused him of being ‘cavalier’ with taxpayers’ money last month.'

New York and Boston are already beta testing itty bitty apartments, and yesterday the LA Times reported that San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors is considering official revisions to the city’s building code to allow for even less living space.
If approved, the new quarters — branded as “affordable by design” — would drop minimum housing code requirements to a mere 220 square feet from 290, only 150 of which could be considered actual living space (unless sleeping in a closet counts). To give some perspective on just how small 220 square feet of space really is, the inside of an average school bus is approximately 250 square feet. A person’s entire apartment would be small enough to fit inside the bus — bathroom, kitchen, and closet included. This vision of an austere lifestyle could hardly accommodate one person, let alone someone with a spouse, children, or pets.'

'Civil war lurks on Spain’s horizon as Catalonia is set to vote on succession to avoid bearing harsh austerity required to pay for a banker bailout.
“Do not play with the feelings of the Catalans” is the totally unveiled threat after Catalonia’s beggars-can-be-choosers demand for an unconditional bailout fell on deaf ears. The traditionally separatist-minded province has decided, according to ANSAmed, has decided to pull a Greece – and escalate with a move to secession. A resolution, on the right of the Catalan people to cut off ties with the Spanish state, will be voted on Thursday by the regional parliament.'
