Trieste businessman says govt guilty of 'social butchery'

(ANSA) - Vatican City, October 3 - A Trieste bar owner was still on the dome of St Peter's Basilica early on Wednesday after spending the night on one of the holiest Catholic churches to protest, among other things, against Premier Mario Monti's government.
Marcello Di Finizio risked his life to climb down to a ledge over a window on the dome late on Tuesday to hang a banner that read: "Help!!! No more Monti, no more Europe, no more multinationals. You are killing us all. Development??? This is just social butchery".
Monti's emergency administration of non-political technocrats has passed tough austerity measures and structural economic reforms since stepping in after the eurozone crisis forced Silvio Berlusconi to resign as premier last year.
Di Finizio is also angry about a European directive that means permits to run seaside establishments like his must be put up for auction.
The 46-year-old, who started his unusual demonstration at around 17:000 local time Tuesday, also climbed the dome to stage a protest in July.
The protester had a long telephone conversation with Tourism and Sport Minister Piero Gnudi and European Affairs Minister Enzo Moavero at around 23:000 local time Tuesday, Vatican sources said, but they failed to persuade him to come down. Pope Benedict XVI was due to give his weekly General Audience in St Peter's Square at 10:30 local time.
