(ANSA) - Rome, October 2 - Pictures of Manfredi Alemanno, the son of Rome Mayor Gianni Alemmano, giving the 'Roman salute' published by the online news service Huffington Post are a "violation," the mayor said Tuesday. The photos, taken while Manfredi was vacationing in Mykonos, Greece, shows him together with friends with his arm straight and raised in the manner popular among 20th-century European fascist regimes. "Unfortunately, it is obvious where the Alemanno family comes from historically...and the son has inherited its questionable habits," Umberto Marroni, caucus leader of the Democratic Party (PD) on Rome city council said.

Mayor Alemanno, who was born in the southeast port city of Bari, debuted in politics at an early age with the youth sector of the neofascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) and his first official post was regional secretary for the Fronte della Gioventu', the MSI's youth division. In 2008, Alemanno became Rome's first right-wing mayor since the fall of Fascism, for Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom party (PDL).

"My son made a mistake but Lucia Annunziata (Italian Huffington Post director) should be ashamed. Our children, even when they do something wrong, should not and must not be put at risk of hate crimes or violence by being put on the front page," Alemanno said.
