Bloodbath at the BBC as chief Entwistle quits: Sensation as Director General is forced out over

'shoddy journalism' - and MORE are expected to join him

George Entwistle had been humiliated in a BBC interview by John Humphrys over his handling of the Newsnight report smearing senior Tory Lord McAlpine over false child sex abuse claims.

He had come under pressure to quit from both senior Government sources and from within the Corporation itself.

Mr Entwistle said he was doing the 'honourable thing' by standing down from his £450,000 a year job - just seven weeks after taking it up. BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten said Mr Entwistle had no choice but to go because of 'shoddy journalism' by the BBC.
