On November 4, 2012, the Syrian website ansaralsham.com posted a video presenting a new Syrian jihad organization called "Jaysh Al-Sahaba fil-Bilad Al-Sham" ("The Army of the Prophet's Companions in Syria"). The group's spokesman states that its goal is not to topple Assad's regime but to implement the shari'a in Syria, and calls on the mujahideen to sharpen their messages so as to distinguish themselves from those who reject the shari'a and pursue other goals.

Recent months have shown increasing signs that Chechen fighters are actively involved in the fighting in Syria, aiding Islamist elements within the opposition forces in their battle against the Assad regime. Some of the reports spoke of Chechens being involved in high-profile attacks and even serving in commanding roles. These indications were countered by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, who utterly denied any Chechen presence in Syria.
On the other hand, the representative for Chechnya in the Russian State Duma, Adam Delimkhanov, seemed to acknowledge that Chechens were fighting alongside the rebels. In a meeting with Syria's mufti, he said that the Chechens infiltrating into Syria to serve as mercenaries with the armed terrorist gangs are traitors to their country. He claimed that they had escaped their country long ago, and had since been harbored by the intelligence services of the U.S., Europe, and Israel.
In addition, the Syrian regime has said that Chechens are among the foreign "terrorist" elements that have arrived in the country to fight alongside the rebels.
