Good afternoon

regarding Halal meat which has been passed to me to reply to you on behalf of the company.

I would like to assure you that all Morrisons-branded fresh meat is British and stunned before slaughter, along with all of the meat sold from our in-store butchers’ counters. None is Halal. In fact, the majority is processed at our own abattoirs, which gives us unrivalled control over the quality and provenance of our meat.

To ensure customer choice we also sell some imported meat, for example frozen lamb from New Zealand.  It is important to note that while a significant proportion of sheep (and beef) in New Zealand is slaughtered to Halal requirements, animal welfare laws in that country require all animals to be stunned immediately prior to slaughter.

We respect the fact that some of our customers would prefer not to purchase meat which has been slaughtered to Halal methods – whether this involves stunning before slaughter or not. This is why we are careful to guarantee that all Morrisons-branded fresh meat and all the meat sold from our in-store butcher’s counter is British and non-Halal.

I hope this reply is helpful.

Kind regards,

Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC
