(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 25 - In a phone call yesterday to congratulate newly elected Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades, European Commission President Jose' Manuel Barroso expressed his ''unshakeable support of efforts to arrive at a lasting solution on the reunification of Cyprus'', the EC made known in a note released today.

Barroso spokesperson Pia Ahrenkilde repeated the EC president's message to reporters on Monday.

''The Cypriot people have given Anastasiades a strong mandate for reform, and to do what is necessary to ensure fiscal and financial sustainability,'' Barroso said.

Before wishing him ''every success during his mandate'', Barroso assured the newly elected Cypriot president that ''he can count on the European Commission's ongoing commitment to aid Cyprus in overcoming the challenges ahead.''
