There was some brilliant news in the Budget on Wednesday. Our MashBeerTax campaign was rewarded with a 1p cut and the abolition of the beer duty escalator (saving taxpayers £200 million a year) and there was also another freeze in Fuel Duty, a victory for our long-running FreezeFuelTax campaign (saving taxpayers another £900 million a year). There was some other good news as well, including a higher Personal Allowance, lower Corporation Tax and a cut in Employers’ National Insurance. Unfortunately, too much of the Budget was tinkering at the margins to help or hinder specific industries in specific situations.

In the Daily Telegraph on Monday I argued that we need a much simpler, fairer and more competitive tax system. George Osborne still has not delivered the tax reform that Britain desperately needs and the value for money taxpayers deserve.

MashBeerTax and FreezeFuelTax victories

After running comprehensive campaigns with activists across the country, and brilliant allies in Parliament and the media, it is great to see concrete savings for taxpayers. It shows our campaigning model can deliver policy results. Thank you for all your help and look out for new campaigns on taxes and spending coming soon.

Voters underestimate the tax burden

Despite most people underestimating the real tax rates they are paying, they still know taxes and spending have got out of hand. More people believe the moon landings were faked than think the Government spends and taxes too little. Read the full results of our new YouGov poll andtest how well you know your Fiscal Facts.

Coalition Government passes 400 tax hikes

Our researchers spent all night going through the fine print to produce a preliminary estimate that the Coalition Government has now implemented over 400 tax hikes! It undermines confidence when people don’t know how their investment today will be taxed tomorrow.
